These new images from the Swedish Coast Guard show the leaks over the Baltic Sea pipelines Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2.

On Monday, seismologists in Denmark and Sweden registered explosions near the current leaks.

The Danish government speaks of sabotage.

Morten Bødskov, Defense Minister Denmark

»We can assume that this incident is no coincidence.

It was very well planned and as you can see from the pictures, the impact is huge.«

Just who is behind it?

According to the Danish defense minister, it should be at least a week or two before the situation around the leaks eases enough for a more detailed investigation of the damage to be possible.

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline runs from Vyborg in Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald.

Nord Stream 2 starts in Ust-Luga, Russia, and also arrives in Lubmin near Greifswald.

The locations of the three leaks are off the Danish island of Bornholm in international waters, but within the 200 nautical mile limit of Denmark and Sweden - the exclusive economic zones of the two countries.

At the leaks, both pipelines are only about 70 meters deep.

Ship and air traffic over the leaks is blocked.

Ships have to avoid the leaks within a five nautical mile radius, about nine kilometers.

Russia firmly rejects allegations that it was responsible for sabotage:

Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin Spokesman

“It is predictable and predictably stupid to make such accusations.

It's predictably stupid and absurd.

That's a big problem for us too: both pipelines are full of gas and all systems were ready to deliver gas - and this gas was very expensive."

The federal government also spoke on Tuesday of a "targeted attack" on the gas lines.

According to SPIEGEL information, the US secret service CIA warned the federal government of possible attacks on the gas pipelines in the summer.

Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State

»There will now be an investigation into these leaks.

Initial findings indicate that this could be an attack or sabotage - but this is initial unconfirmed information.

What is clear is that these events are in nobody's interest."

According to the Swedish Coast Guard, the gas continues to escape in large quantities from the leaks.

The alleged acts of sabotage of the gas pipes show how vulnerable the European infrastructure under water is.

Gas lines or internet cables can hardly be monitored in these places and are hardly protected.
