Severe air pollution was recorded this evening (Wednesday) in Haifa and the northern settlements, during an abnormality in the emissions from the torches at the Carmel Olefins factory.
Black smoke is emitted from the factory, which is owned by the Bezen Group and is intended for the production of raw materials in the plastics industry.
"An event of active torch activity, which includes the emission of black smoke, during which a value of 15.65 tons per hour was recorded in the continuous monitoring data of the total number of Carmel Olefin torches, more than double the maximum value allowed according to the emission permit," according to the Association of Cities for the Protection of the Environment Haifa Bay Area.

"During the fall, when the wind drives the pollutants to the downtown neighborhoods of Haifa, the leaks and malfunctions in the complex particularly harm the health of the residents. This year, several anomalies were noted in the activity of the Carmel Olefin lamps and the union will continue to investigate and promote enforcement procedures against the factory. There is no place for a polluting plastic factory in the heart of the metropolis and the industry must be closed This one as soon as possible," the union concluded.
