Cuba witnessed a complete blackout last night, after Hurricane Ian severely damaged the electrical network.
And the French press agency quoted the public electricity company, Union Electrica, as saying in a tweet on Twitter: “The country is without electricity service, and this power outage is caused by the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane Ian, which completed its path towards the state of Florida.”
For its part, the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Minerals said: “It is an exceptional situation, and its treatment requires great accuracy,” explaining that the electricity service will gradually return, and although the hurricane left Cuba yesterday evening, the rain and winds had not stopped in the coastal area, while the damages caused were concentrated. About it in Pinar del Río, the westernmost province of the island, as well as in the neighboring cities of Artemisa and Havana, where 1.2 million people live.
About 40,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Pinar del Rio province, while severe damage was recorded to power lines, homes and facilities.
The US state of Florida is preparing to face Hurricane Ian, whose strong winds preceded its arrival in the southern US state.
According to the US National Hurricane Center, Ian is expected to gain more strength before it hits the west coast of Florida, and then it will be classified as a major and very dangerous hurricane.
