Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler at Enki Research, confirmed that the expected damage and economic losses to the area that Hurricane Ian will reach may exceed $45 billion, according to current forecasts.
And the Sky News network quoted Watson as saying: “Damage of this magnitude may place Hurricane Ian in the eighth place in the list of the most expensive hurricanes for the American economy,” noting that the hurricane caused many mass evacuations, canceled thousands of flights, and closed many of schools in Florida, as well as nationwide blackouts in Cuba.
He explained that the wind speed caused by the hurricane reached 130 miles per hour and is now about 180 miles from Punta Gorda in Florida.
It is reported that about 40,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the province of Pinar del Rio, while severe damage was recorded to power lines, homes and facilities.
