The Pan Sutong Shanghai-Hong Kong Economic Policy Institute of Lingnan University announced yesterday (27th) that the happiness index of Hong Kong school children in the 2021/2022 school year was 6.77 points, a slight decrease of 0.08 percentage points from the previous year.

The research team pointed out that the epidemic has generally increased the pressure faced by school children, especially academic pressure. However, the life education index of school children also increased during the same period, and the happiness index fell better than expected.

The research team collected questionnaires from 16 primary schools and 9 middle schools in March this year, with a total of 1989 primary school students, 1504 middle school students and 150 teachers.

The results showed that the overall happiness index of school children was 6.77 (out of 10), down 1.17% from 6.85 in the previous school year.

Among them, the happiness index of 14-year-old students is the lowest, only 6.15 points, and the highest is 9-year-old students, reaching 7.7 points.

The research team pointed out that the more troublesome the higher the class, the greater the challenge, and the bullying incidents were mostly concentrated in the lower class, calling on teachers and parents to pay attention.

Life education affects the happiness index of school children, and the life education index includes indicators such as care, wisdom, perseverance and action.

Affected by the epidemic in the 20/21 school year, visits, visitor activities, art activities, etc. were forced to be cancelled, and the life education index of school children fell.

As for the 21/22 school year, the in-school life education index rose from 3.81 to 3.87 (out of 5).

The research team pointed out that the school's life education index has rebounded, which is conducive to stabilizing the happiness index of school children. Activities such as teaching, seminars, and visits also have a significant effect on school children.

Academic pressure makes the happiness index drop, and it is recommended that home and school strengthen life education

Although the higher the life education index, the higher the student's happiness index, the research points out that the negative impact of academic stress is far greater than the effect of life education.

Academic pressure will reduce the happiness index. 36% and 15% of school children feel that the pressure from academic and extracurricular activities is very high, which offsets the positive effect of life education on the happiness index of school children and hurts family happiness.

In addition, about 12 percent of schoolchildren in the survey said they disagreed with the value of living in the world, up 1 percentage point from the previous survey.

Another about 8% of schoolchildren disagree with having enough time to do things they love.

Research has pointed out that leisure time is of great help in improving the happiness index of school children. If school children have more leisure time, they will feel that life is more valuable.

The research team recommends that schools and families strengthen life education. For example, schools can use singing, art, drama and other teaching methods to carry out life education, strengthen the training of teachers' life education, and strengthen support for parents.

Parents can also communicate and share more with their children, respect their views and privacy, and enhance their self-confidence and happiness.

The research team emphasizes that the relationship between parents is the most important factor affecting the happy growth of school children.
