Report: The Kremlin rejected the annexation of eastern Ukraine for fear of popular protest inside Russia Israel today

2022-09-28T16:30:05.171Z

"We have not yet succeeded in convincing the public that these territories are even needed by Russia," a Kremlin official told the independent website "Meduza", a day after the referendum in the "republics" controlled by Russia. There is no need to rush," the source stressed.

In the Kremlin, it was decided to postpone the annexation of the occupied territories in Ukraine, reports this evening in Russia.

A source close to Putin's office told the independent news site "Meduza" that the decision was made in order not to upset the citizens of Russia.

"We have not yet succeeded in convincing the public that these territories are even required by Russia," said the source, "therefore we will not speed up procedures now because the public effect will aim for zero. Even so, everything will be annexed, there is no need to rush."

At the beginning of the week it was reported that Russia would annex the occupied territories as a result of the "referendums" as early as the day after tomorrow (Friday), but already today, even before the report in "Meduza", there were signs that the move would be postponed.

If it was indeed decided to postpone the annexation, it is possible that in the Kremlin they are counting on the fact that in Kiev they will still agree to negotiate a cease-fire. In Kiev they completely reject the possibility.

This morning the governors of the "republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk and the heads of the Ukrainian territories occupied by the invasion in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces delivered the final results of the "referendums" on "joining Russia".

In Luhansk, 98.42% voted in favor;

in Donetsk – 99.92%;

In Zaporizhzhia – 93.11%;

and in Harson 87.05%.

The Western countries have made it clear that they will not recognize the "referendums", and so did Israel the other day, which has so far taken a neutral position in relation to Russia.

In the meantime, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that there will soon be "action in response to the expectations of the four regions" although it did not specify what the planned timetable is for the implementation of the annexation measures.

The Foreign Ministry added that the referendums are in line with international law.

As you may remember, before the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the separatist "republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas region, which until then had fought against the Ukrainian regime with unofficial assistance from the Kremlin.

The decision to start a war was due, among other things, to the need to "protect" their residents on the part of the Ukrainians.
