STEAM|PolyU re-launches youth research mentoring programme to enhance students' research interest and plan for the future

PolyU once again organized the "Adolescent Research Guidance Programme" this year. More than 70 senior students from different faculties of PolyU guided about 110 senior high school students from 41 schools to conduct research in various fields.


PolyU once again organized the "Adolescent Research Guidance Programme" this year. More than 70 senior students from different faculties of PolyU guided about 110 senior high school students from 41 schools to conduct research in various fields.

PolyU pointed out that the project can equip young people to face the future and enhance their interest in research. It is hoped that the project can help students plan for further studies and employment, and prepare for the future.


The Polytechnic University once again held the "Adolescent Research Guidance Program", hoping that the program can help students plan for further studies and employment.

Students participating in the Youth Research Guidance Programme will undertake a 4-month individual or group project research under the guidance of PolyU academics, covering topics such as rehabilitation therapy, biomedicine, nursing, hospitality and tourism, design, language, business management, etc.

Students are responsible for designing research, collecting data, analyzing and reporting.

During the programme, students will also have the opportunity to participate in PolyU's laboratories and educational facilities to deepen their understanding of research theory, as well as the knowledge and skills required to conduct research.

PolyU Vice-President (Students and Global Affairs), Prof. Yang Liwei, said that he hoped that the project could help secondary school students to gain an in-depth understanding of their areas of interest as early as possible and acquire relevant knowledge and skills.

PolyU Vice-President (Students and Global Affairs), Professor Yang Liwei, said that PolyU first launched a youth research mentoring programme last year, which gave senior high school students the opportunity to participate in international academic conferences and broaden their horizons.

Prof. Yang hopes that the program can help middle school students to deeply understand their areas of interest as early as possible, acquire relevant knowledge and skills, and cultivate their interest in research. He believes that the program is very beneficial to students' personal and social development.

Under the guidance of PolyU academics, 5 students conducted a group study titled "Effects of Zentangle Art on Improving Adolescents' Mental Health".

5 students from Ying Wa Girls' School, Hip Yan Secondary School, Youcai (Yang Yin You Di) College, Hope School and Hong Kong Island Secondary School, under the guidance of Dr. Lai Wan-yee, Associate Professor of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of PolyU and the team, used telerehabilitation to conduct a well-known study. A panel study on "Effects of Zentangle Art on Improving Adolescent Mental Health".

The students said that their research aimed at the mental health of young people under the epidemic, and proposed that the use of Zentangle paintings could help everyone to relieve stress in the form of video while sitting at home.

They also mentioned that they learned from the plan how to use electronic platforms to remotely collect and analyze health data such as mental health and heart rate variability in study cases, and understand that scientific research needs to be flexible and keep pace with the times.

Another 4 students conducted research related to "Assessment of Scoliosis Using 3D Ultrasound".

Another 4 students from Diocesan Girls' College, Hung Lap College, Yuen Long District Secondary School in Heung Yee Kuk, New Territories and Hong Kong Island Secondary School, under the guidance of Prof. Cheng Wing-ping, Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering at PolyU and his team, conducted the "Using 3D Ultrasound Assessment". Scoliosis" related research.

The students said that they used the innovative technology Scolioscan medical device for the first time in the project to study the common phenomenon of scoliosis in adolescents and how to study the problem from a more professional and academic perspective.

Students mentioned that they benefited well from the program, which inspired them to take an interest in the medical industry and consider pursuing a career in the industry after graduation.
