The reproaches to Lula intensify for the lack of concreteness of his plans for the economy

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrives as the favorite to win the presidential elections in Brazil next Sunday with the background of half a century in politics, but without a government plan on paper.

And that is reaping an avalanche of reproaches.

Because the economic crisis is still wreaking serious havoc, despite slight signs of improvement, and the best placed to govern the country has not explained in detail how he intends, for example, to tame inflation –the priority of the poor–, create employment or combine the interests of environmentalists with those of the agricultural sector.

He has also not given any clues as to which person he would want at the head of the Ministry of Economy.

The leftist Lula is a skilled negotiator.

He now he is at the moment of gathering support in a very wide spectrum.

Only if he wins will he start taking care of those matters.

Five days before the elections, it continues adding unexpected accessions, such as those of Joaquim Barbosa, a former Supreme Court judge who judged the first great corruption scandal of the Workers' Party (PT), the

mensalão

, or Xuxa, the former queen of Brazilian television.

A group of economists who describe themselves as not related to the PT have launched this Tuesday a manifesto in favor of the useful vote in the first round, reports the

Folha de S. Paulo

newspaper .

The signatories maintain that, despite "the serious discrepancies with policies implemented in the past by the PT governments, Lula is the only valid option to defeat the current government, which represents a greater backwardness."

A handful of former finance ministers from center-right governments prior to the PT executives have also announced their support for the progressive candidate.

But the ambiguity in which Lula feels so comfortable is creating discomfort in certain circles, as voting day approaches and he maintains a comfortable lead, according to polls.

Lula leads a very broad coalition of ten parties that he always presents as a great front in favor of democracy and against the damage and threats posed by the current president, Jair Bolsonaro.

That is why he recruited Geraldo Alckmin as number two, one of his main adversaries during much of his political career.

Former governor of São Paulo, he is from the center right and has very good relations with the economic power and with the most conservative sectors.

Many voters explain that if they have decided to vote for Lula against Bolsonaro, and ignore criticism of his administration, it is because Alckmin is the guarantee that his economic policies and others will not abandon orthodoxy.

Faced with a probable victory, the editorial of the newspaper

O Globo

asked itself last Sunday: “Which Lula will govern?

The one who chose Geraldo Alckim as vice president?

(...) Or the one who turns around and torpedoes the reforms and privatizations?

Eight days before the elections, nobody knows”, stated one of the most widely read newspapers in Brazil.

Five days before the elections, Lula will be the star of a dinner in São Paulo on Tuesday with a hundred businessmen organized by the

Sphere

Think Tank .

A few days ago, the other major newspaper,

Folha de S. Paulo

, reproached the candidate for a third presidential term for wanting to receive a "blank check" from the most reluctant electorate to reach the top of power without revealing important details about His plans.

The former president has indeed insisted that the next Economy Minister will be a politician, with the waist to negotiate with the powerful Congress.

But on the labor reform, the spending ceiling, the role of the State in economic policy and other relevant issues, he has given few details.

And sometimes he walks a fine line to avoid contractions, as when he courts environmentalists and businessmen from the agricultural sector in the same week.
