Lanes are to be reduced: the building committee is planning Gartenstraße as a new thoroughfare to relieve traffic in the city center

Grafing - Is it worth reconstructing every single step after a long, detoured hike to a beautiful spot?

Sometimes you might have to to not get lost.

And maybe that's why there were 14 closely printed pages on the table at the most recent building committee meeting in Grafing.

But now it goes on.

The beautiful little place to which the city has been en route for years: a traffic-calmed market square, the Grafings parlor, where pedestrians and cyclists are supposed to cavort - to keep the center and its shops lively.

Shopping, strolling and drinking coffee: trade and change used to be the name of the game before the great avalanche of cars set in and temporarily transformed the market square into an inhospitable place of transit.

20,000 vehicles a day were counted in 2009.

Market place should become market place again

In the future, the marketplace should live up to its name again, was the unanimous recommendation of the committee to the city council.

If nothing is done, almost 20,000 cars will soon be driving through it again - despite the east and west bypass, which will relieve the pressure.

As early as 2035, there could be 19,000 cars again, according to the Obermeyer Tourist Office.

Its forecasts have largely been confirmed in the past.

The session was about what the next steps on the long hike to the attractive center look like.

The aim is the "greatest possible traffic relief in the city center with its historic market square and the structural redesign to improve the quality of stay and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists".

In addition, "a limitation of the maximum speed to a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour and, if possible, the conversion to a traffic-calmed business area" is planned.

Lane in the center should be eliminated

Traffic bypasses close to the center are a basic requirement.

The most important: a future passage from Glonner Strasse via Gartenstrasse to Bahnhofstrasse.

There is a vacant lot there where the Hut Mayr house stood, which burned down and was demolished.

The city could buy the land.

There, traffic is to be diverted from Glonner Straße in the direction of Bahnhofstraße and thus bypass the market square.

Consequence: The lane in the center directly in front of the Volksbank building from the town hall in the direction of the train station would be omitted.

The city council would go one step further if it closed both lanes between the Volksbank and the central island on the market square.

Then there would be no more roundabouts in the center.

The catch: The junction from Glonner Strasse to Gartenstrasse (at the zebra crossing in front of the Evangelical Church) could become so overloaded that a traffic light would be needed.

This in turn could trigger a backlog in Glonner Strasse itself, which is lined with residential buildings.

Graduate state roads to local roads

The city is therefore leaving it at first with the blocking of a lane on the market square and is monitoring the development.

What is certain is that the tranquil days on Gartenstrasse with relatively little traffic will be a thing of the past.

The concept also includes the fact that Aiblinger Strasse will no longer branch off from Glonner Strasse at the entrance to Grafing after the new settlement, but will be further out of town as the "Aiblinger Spange".

The city wants to downgrade the state roads that run through the market square to local roads.

That gives room for manoeuvre, but there is still a long way to go.
