In celebration of the International Day of Translation, the Syrian General Book Authority in the Ministry of Culture organized this morning the national symposium on translation, under the title “Translation between Tradition and Creativity - Places of Creativity in Translation” at Al-Assad National Library in Damascus, with the participation of Syrian translators with experience in transferring knowledge, science, and literary productions. The symposium, which the Syrian General Book Organization has been holding since 2017, read at the outset by the translator Tania Harb, the message of the Syrian translators on the International Day of Translation, indicating that translation is a noble profession, centered on knowledge activity and a cultural and creative space, where its importance is manifested in the fact that it leads to the convergence of cultures and peoples, And dissemination of its various sciences on a larger scale.

She pointed out that the International Day of Translation is an opportunity to acknowledge the work of translators, who play an important role in bringing countries, peoples and cultures together, promoting dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development, and promoting global peace and security.

In her speech, the Minister of Culture, Dr. Lubana Mushawah, indicated that the celebration of the International Day of Translation, as a humanitarian act, left an indelible mark on the path of intellectual and cognitive development, indicating that the aim of this symposium in the first place is to develop the translation product, and to overcome the difficulties that prevent this at all levels. And she explained that in translation, the cultural inventory overlaps with the linguistic, and in order to accomplish the translation process, the mind must work dismantling, analyzing, restructuring and building, in order to transfer meanings and concepts, and to create the desired intellectual and emotional impact.

In turn, the Director-General of the Syrian General Book Organization, Dr. Nayef Al-Yassin pointed out that creativity without translation loses a lot. Without translation, the reader would not have known the masterpieces of world literature, and would have suffered from intellectual poverty, and severe aesthetic need, had he not exchanged these masterpieces through translation, addressing part of the problems related to them. , most notably the translation of creative poetic works.

Al-Yassin explained that there is a great consensus that translating poetry is very difficult, as it is in terms of form, words, images, rhythm and music, and all that the untalented or non-experienced translator can transmit is speech and images, while transmitting rhythm and music requires an exceptional translator.

In the first session moderated by Al-Yassin, Dr. Thaer Zain Al-Din spoke about poetry translation and creativity, while Dr. Basel Masalmeh dealt with the deletion and increase in creative translation, and Dr. Omar Sheikh Al-Shabab focused on creativity in translation, while Dr. Munther Al-Absi and Lina Dawyan reviewed Coleridge’s poetic creativity. Translating private and public affairs.

On her axis, Dr. Zubaydah Al-Qadi spoke about “literary translation between craftsmanship and creativity,” to conclude the work of the first day of the symposium with the theme “Translation of creative works and their impact on the publishing industry,” presented by Haitham Hafez, head of the Syrian Publishers Union.

The symposium, which will be held in cooperation with Damascus University, the Higher Institute of Translation, the Arabic Language Academy, the Arab Writers Union, and the Syrian Publishers Union tomorrow, will discuss a number of topics, most notably machine translation and the problem of creativity and the advantages of texts with machine translation compared to human translation, and creative translation in the business world hosted in the small hall in the library the lion.
