In view of the struggle between the federal and state governments to finance the relief for citizens and companies, Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) has called for unity.

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine put Germany in an "extraordinary emergency situation," he said on Wednesday evening after consultations with his country colleagues in Berlin.

Berlin - "In this situation, national unity and unity between the federal and state governments is of the utmost importance."

Against this background, the prime ministers decided that there must be an energy price cap for gas and heat, as already decided for electricity, which includes private households and companies.

"And it should be designed and implemented in concrete terms very soon."

According to the federal states, Germany also needs a concept to secure energy-intensive companies in particular.

"Our goal must be to preserve jobs and added value in German industry," said Tschentscher.

Securing and improving the energy supply is crucial to overcoming the crisis.

"The efforts to save energy and for a so-called "fuel switch" - i.e. the conversion from gas to coal and oil - must be continued." In addition, the expansion of renewable energies should be accelerated.

"The federal and state governments should provide economic and hardship aid, as in the Corona crisis," said the mayor.

The sports and cultural sectors must also be included.

The federal states wanted to support the measures of the third relief package of the Berlin traffic light coalition, said Tschentscher.

"This requires a fair distribution of the burden." The special burdens that would arise for the federal states in local transport, in the housing benefit reform, in the hospitals and, above all, in the reception of refugees, would also have to be taken into account.

Since Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) was unable to attend the prime ministers' conference due to a corona infection, the federal states and the federal government are to be coordinated in another conference next Tuesday.
