The city of Izyum in eastern Ukraine.
The dog »Sparky« searches for bodies in the rubble of a building.
Yurii Ivashchenko, Civil-Military Cooperation
»Soldiers were buried in this collapsed building.
We have already found some bodies in the rubble and are looking for more with the help of the dog.
We'll mark the sites and then start the recovery."
The search team says they have already found bodies of soldiers in this former barracks of the Ukrainian army - only with the help of the dog "Sparky".
Karyna Kolysnychenko, Volunteer
»The dog gives us a signal where a dead body might be.
We check that and then the soldiers start clearing the rubble and looking for the bodies.”
The city of Izyum was liberated from Russian troops by Ukrainian forces just a few weeks ago.
The search operation is a preparation for the clean-up work in the city.
Debris and rubble from shelled and destroyed buildings can only be cleared once the bodies have been recovered.
Search parties are also on the move that day in the city of Dementiivka north of Kharkiv.
This time by the Ukrainian National Guard.
The men are looking for buried bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.
Vitalii Shum, National Guard Ukraine
»Today we found the body of a comrade.
He fought with us in the second half of June.
The fighting was relatively heavy for this area.”
The soldier's body is exhumed by the men and placed in a plastic bag.
Dementiivka is only about 15 kilometers from the border with Russia.
The place was liberated by Ukrainian forces on May 18.
However, due to heavy artillery fire, the Ukrainian forces have only now been able to salvage the dead.
Vitalii Shum, National Guard Ukraine
»Each unit keeps a record of who is missing.
Unless we have proof that the comrade is in captivity, he is missing until the body is recovered and identified.”
Ukraine's offensive against the Russian occupiers has been particularly successful in the east of the country.
Again and again, the Ukrainian soldiers find graves that indicate war crimes committed by Russia.
About two weeks ago, the Ukrainians found a grave in the city of Izyum with well over 400 exhumed bodies.
According to Ukrainian sources, some showed signs of torture.
Just a few days ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced that the Ukrainian authorities had found two more mass graves in the city of Izyum with hundreds of dead people.
