The US Senate has voted to move forward with a temporary funding bill that would avert the US government's shutdown next Saturday.
Reuters reported that the vote was taken after House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer removed from the bill a controversial clause related to energy permits, and the bill has several other legislative steps before its approval, but last night's vote, which won the support of 72 votes to 23 votes against, is an indication The change, made just half an hour before the vote, means the bill has had enough support in the Democratic-controlled Senate to proceed to a procedural vote and begin limited debates.
The vote represents a step towards avoiding a partial US government shutdown, a potential embarrassment for Democrats six weeks before the November 8 midterm elections.
