The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wencesland, stressed that the continuation of the Israeli occupation leads to a serious deterioration in the Palestinian territories and an escalation of the conflict in the region.
“There has been little progress in implementing the resolution since its adoption in December 2016,” Wencesland said in his quarterly briefing today, on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2334, which calls on Israel to halt settlement activities. Continued Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and demolitions and appropriation of private property of Palestinians remain a serious concern.
Wencesland stressed that ending the occupation requires a collective international effort, and that the current path is leading to a permanent state of violence and conflict.
