Today is a day on which they fast for the killing of Gedaliah ben Ahikam and it is called "Gedaliah's fast".

Who is Gedaliah ben Ahikam?

The Rebbe Rabbi Yosiah Pinto explained in his lesson:

Nebuchadnezzar saw him as a special and unique person and exalted among the people and appointed him to be the head of the remnant of the exile in the Land of Israel, there was a man named Ishmael ben Netina who did not accept this appointment, whom Nebuchadnezzar appointed over the remnant in the Land of Israel and planned to kill Gedaliah ben Ahikam, this matter reached the ears of a man named Yohanan ben Korah who immediately came before Gedaliah ben Ahikam and warned him of Ishmael ben Netina, who plans to come to meet him and during the feast and then the feast or to draw his sword and kill him.

But Gedaliah was a man of noble spirit and stood up and said: I do not accept this slander and there is no such thing as a Jew standing up to kill a rabbi and a leader of the people of Israel. Those around him and his family begged him to avoid meeting Ishmael ben Netina or Yizhar, etc., but Gedaliah would not accept all the words and stood And he met Ishmael ben Netina, in the middle of the meeting he took out his friend and killed him and from that day the most severe disasters befell the people of Israel and much blood was shed.

And when we look at the words of our sages, we find a great miracle, our sages blame Gedaliah son of Ahikam for all the things that happened to the Israelites and this is what the Sage said: "Tana is the pit that Ishmael son of Netina filled with the dead, it is written: And the pit that Ishmael threw there were all the carcasses of people that were killed by Gedaliah And Gedaliah Hargan, not Ishmael Hargan?

But because he had to feel the advice of Yohanan ben Karach and did not feel that the scripture was superior to him as if he had cursed (Nida SA).

In the words of these Sages, we learn a great foundation in our lives, one should be careful and respect every person and not accept slander against any person, but a person should act with the utmost caution and have an open eye to every matter and interest, and if he did not do so, he would not be able to afterwards to justify himself that he did not want to be slandered, here Gedaliah also did not want to be slandered and great destruction was caused to the world by this word.

And here at the end of Rosh Hashanah, after the exaltation of the soul that we all go through and the great closeness to God and forgiveness and forgiveness for every son of Israel, in any case we fast and remind the caution to be vigilant in our lives in every matter and matter, "May God reign forever", sanctify your name in your world", and keep our eyes on your return to Zion Soon, Amen, so be it, the Lord will give courage to his people, the Lord will bless his people with peace."
