The ZEDU-1 electric car prototype was unveiled by DLR in cooperation with the car manufacturer HWA in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

The vehicle should be completely emission-free during operation.

Stuttgart - At the latest since the EU decision to only allow climate-friendly new cars from 2035, the major car manufacturers worldwide have been focusing on low-emission drives.

Above all, e-mobility is considered a climate-friendly alternative to the frowned upon combustion engines.

But not only established manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz or BMW are working on the constant improvement of their electric models, scientific approaches are also coming up again and again.

Students from Stuttgart, for example, are on course for a world record with a self-built electric racing car, and students from Eindhoven have developed an electric car that cleans the air while driving.

On Wednesday, September 28, the ZEDU-1 prototype developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and car manufacturer HWA was presented in Stuttgart, BW24 reports.

In the afternoon, the editors were able to take a look at the unveiled prototype on Stuttgart's Karlsplatz, which circled the equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I in the center of the square and came to a halt to the applause of the crowd.

According to a DLR press release, the e-car largely avoids the emission of fine dust and microplastics, making it “the most environmentally friendly road vehicle in the world.”

E-car prototype ZEDU-1: Almost complete avoidance of emissions through recuperation

The big goal of the prototype is already reflected in the name of the electric car.

The Generation 1 Zero Emission Drive Unit - ZEDU-1 for short - largely reduces the emission of fine dust and microplastics caused by the abrasion of tires and brakes.

This is made possible in the electric car by DLR and the company HWA, which incidentally emerged from today's Mercedes subsidiary Mercedes-AMG, through recuperation.

Specifically, the classic disc brake in the wheel housing has been replaced by a multi-disk brake that is integrated into the closed electric motor-transmission unit.

"What we can already say is that we can completely avoid brake abrasion," the team is convinced.

“For us, people’s health and an unpolluted environment are paramount.

The ZEDU-1 project is concentrating on the components that have so far received little attention and are now gradually being regulated in terms of their emissions by the EU Commission through legislative measures: namely brakes and tires,” explained Tjark Siefkes, Director of DLR -Institute for Vehicle Concepts, in Stuttgart at the presentation of the ZEDU-1.

"With the ZEDU-1 prototype presented today, we are showing solutions for how we can be on the road in the future with virtually no emissions."

ZEDU-1: DLR and HWA want to bring the prototype into series production after successful tests

According to the announcement, the development of the prototype was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism with an investment of six million euros.

Economics Minister Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut (CDU) was therefore also present at the first public presentation on September 28th.

"I am pleased that the research project 'Zero Emission Drive Unit - Generation 1' has successfully developed a prototype that tackles particulate matter emissions as the most important causes of mobility-related environmental pollution and thus lays the foundation for almost emission-free mobility on the road in the future." , said the minister.

In the summer, the e-car prototype was subjected to comprehensive tests on the premises of the Boxberg test center and on the institute's own roller test bench in Stuttgart.

"All the components in this vehicle have been newly developed, the drive in the form of an electric motor braking unit as well as the housings for the tires and the aerodynamically adapted components on the vehicle," said project manager Franz Philipps from the DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts.

Aerodynamics play a particularly important role in battery-powered vehicles.

At its world premiere, the e-car flagship EQS from Mercedes-Benz was considered the most aerodynamic road car in the world.

With the public presentation of the ZEDU-1 on Karlsplatz in Stuttgart, the project team has reached a first milestone.

According to the press release, those responsible are also satisfied with the tests.

"Our measurements of tire wear have shown that we can completely avoid tire wear up to a speed of 50 kilometers per hour and reduce it by 70 to 80 percent at higher speeds," it says.

"The next steps are to further develop the technology together with industry in order to be able to successfully bring it into series production."
