Rabbi Reshef Tamir Cohen, Petah Tikva regional station shift commander, on the fire at Schneider Hospital in Petah Tikva (Omer Shapira Israel Fire and Rescue)

A fire broke out tonight (Thursday) in the cardiac surgery department at the Schneider Pediatric Center.

The fire brigade took control of it without casualties.

The source of the fire is unknown, but the hypothesis is that it started from a short circuit.

The hospital stated that eight ventilated patients were safely evacuated to the specially opened emergency complex, and the rest of the patients were evacuated to the various hospital departments.

The hospital staff informed the parents of the hospitalized children who were at home at the time of the incident.

"Everything is fine now, we had an absolutely stormy night," said the director of Schneider Hospital, Dr. Efrat Baron Harlev. "Medically no harm was done to any child, parent or our staff, to my great joy, but it is certainly a very dramatic incident of a fire in the surgical department Chest and heart with us.

Very great help and very professional resourcefulness, both from our team and from the police, and the fire brigade that arrived very quickly.

They put out the fire, cleared the very thick smoke and we directed the children to other areas of the hospital and arrived in the morning a little calmer."

According to her, the fire was apparently caused by an electrical short.

"It obviously set the ceiling on fire and continued a little from there with a lot of smoke in the ward. The main thing was the smoke."

Dr. Baron Harlev shared that "a fire or any emergency is always very dramatic anywhere, especially in a situation where children are involved and above all sick children and very worried parents.

We work in a parallel manner which is first of all to deal with the emergency itself and at the same time there was a nurse who also called the parents who were not in the hospital to inform them, and also the parents who were with the children who could evacuate on foot or on their hands we headed out.

There is no doubt that in the first moments it is a very big panic, but since I practice these situations, and fortunately we have not yet had an incident like this, the staff is very skilled in these and other exercises, and also skilled in reassuring parents.

There was a lot of pressure, but it lasted only a few minutes until it was clear to everyone that the children were fine, under supervision, care and full control."

The event started at quarter past three in the morning.

So, the nursing staff noticed the smoke, and activated all the mechanisms immediately.

"Actually, we are back to normal, a slightly different routine, but we are back. We have not stopped any activity, the inpatient service and our operating rooms are also fully operational. In the meantime, there are many maintenance, cleaning, security teams inside the hospital, as well as protests at the hospital, with a lot of support from Our main management. We hope and estimate that we can physically return the department to function within days, but we are fully functional."
