Fake or not?

A video on Twitter is said to show a shark in the water masses in Florida.

Hurricane Ian made landfall on Wednesday.

Florida/Munich - Hurricane "Ian" hit the southwest coast of Florida with full force on Wednesday.

The hurricane, classified as "extremely dangerous", had reached wind speeds of 240 kilometers per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The result: power outages and massive flooding.

In the city of Fort Myers, entire neighborhoods were flooded.

Meanwhile, a video went viral on Twitter, which is said to show a shark in the water of the streets.

Hurricane Ian: Shark in Florida?

Twitter video goes viral

"Hurricane Ian's storm surge is so severe that it brought a shark onto the streets of Fort Myers," wrote Colin McCarthy, a California meteorologist who describes himself on Twitter, and posted a video.

This should come from a resident in said city.

Apparently filmed from inside a house or car, it shows an animal's tail fin swimming back and forth in the water.

The approximately ten-second video, which was published on Wednesday (September 28), initially reached 9.7 million views (as of September 29).

It has been circulating on the platform ever since - and Twitter users are concerned about the animal and the people of Florida.

"The poor shark is stuck," wrote a user who seems certain that the animal is actually a shark.

However, not everyone seems to be quite so convinced.

"It looks like a tarpoon," one user noted.

This is a fish that at first glance has a shark-like tail fin.

Other users agreed with the assumption.

But whether tarpon or shark, the creature needs help, according to many in the comment section.

There are also warnings from users to people in Florida to be careful because of the shark.

Fake?

Shark video during hurricane "Ian" is not supposed to be real - Twitter users are puzzled

In addition to compassion for the animal and warnings for the people of Florida, there are also some comments that question the authenticity of the video.

A user wrote that the video should not be about streets in Fort Myers.

Another user explained that the video has existed since 2010 – but she did not provide any evidence of this.

Last but not least, the video was released before the hurricane in Fort Myers was even raging, she added.

Whether the shared video is actually a fake or not, whether it is actually a shark or not, cannot be verified.

It certainly isn't the first time that images of sharks in flooded areas have surfaced after a hurricane like Ian.
