Whether commuting to work by train, reaching for the gas pump at the gas station or going to the supermarket: everyday life is becoming more and more expensive.

When inflation was last as high as it is now, our grandparents were still young.

Dusseldorf - Inflation is now in double digits: High costs for energy and food have made everyday life significantly more expensive than before.

In September, the inflation rate was 10.1 percent, the state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Thursday in Düsseldorf.

The value has not been this high since the early 1950s.

In August, inflation was still 8.1 percent.

In the case of the inflation rate, the prices in the same month of the previous year are taken as a comparison.

Above all, fuel, household energy and food became more expensive.

The prices for butter and quark, for example, rose by around 60 percent and pasta by 46 percent.

Compared to the previous month of August, consumers had to dig much deeper into their wallets than before, for example for train journeys.

That was because the 9-euro ticket was still valid in August and the usual, much more expensive tariffs were valid again in September.

This development can be seen in the figures from IT.NRW in the "combined passenger transport" segment, where average expenditure has tripled compared to August (plus 218 percent).

Fuel and clothing also cost more (petrol: up 14 percent, clothing: up 5 percent).
