Memmingen - "Other people feel".
Under this motto, which is understood as a mission and leitmotif, and which is also the slogan of the theater opening festival, the doors of the Landestheater Schwaben will be reopened on October 1, 2022.
The theater is becoming an important place of exchange, encounter, discussion and entertainment for the people of the city and the region.
Dancing across rifts that are deepening due to current crises, coming together again - the new artistic director duo Christine Hofer and Alexander May see this as an essential social task of their upcoming work.
It is important to realize the division in society and to counteract it.
“We need the feeling, the feeling for and from the other in order to find and locate ourselves.
Identity is based on self and external perception.
The crises that have overtaken us - Corona above all - increase the isolation, let us lose sight of what we have in common and harden the fronts at lines of conflict," say Hofer and May. Accordingly, the new directors have asked their future audience these questions in the season booklet :
“Will our life together be different?
Will social differences manifest and will opposing positions harden?
Do we feel that our fears and hopes are being taken seriously?
Can we endure conflicts together and approach each other again?” The answer to this is to be given with the theater, which will be shown on the various stages of the LTS from October.
A number of changes in advance
This has been preceded by a number of changes that are difficult to list in their entirety.
First of all, the artistic direction has turned into a tandem that could be titled “Celebrate the Contradictions” or the guiding principle of “Unity in Plurality”: A man and a woman, coming from West and East Germany respectively, through many intersections familiar with each other in their work biographies, have made it their task to lead the theater into the future with the appropriate structural changes.

More than 80 percent of the staff had to be filled - especially the artistic ones - since the majority had gone to Oberhausen with the former director Kathrin Mädler.
But already during the preliminary rehearsals in July and then at the internal opening of the season in September, it became apparent that the size of this task also corresponds to the artistic possibilities and opportunities.
For many of the new actors, Memmingen means the start of their careers after completing drama school.
Together with the players who had been playing for a long time (in Memmingen), they quickly found themselves in a mood of departure and demonstrated this pioneering spirit together in rehearsals.
It will need this spirit to bring the theater through the times of crises and to do justice to its task of always being a place for people from town and country to come together - where it is hardly possible anywhere else, together To get heart and mind vibrating, to face the great conflicts of our time in a playful way, to look for solutions or simply to overcome them with laughter.

The
"Theaterfest" on Saturday, October 1st, from 12 noon
is, so to speak, the visiting card.
The new team introduces itself in person.
It will offer the citizens entertainment and information from morning to night around the Theaterplatz and at many of the theater's venues and arouse curiosity about the season. Admission is free and with a bit of luck you can also win tickets for one of the theater evenings .
