Mexico will propose Alicia Bárcena to head the Inter-American Development Bank

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced during his morning conference this Thursday that Alicia Bárcena, current Mexican ambassador to Chile and former executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), will be proposed to replace Mauricio Claver- Carone, who until Monday served as director of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and who was removed from office due to a scandal that personally related him to an employee and the favorable treatment she received within her work environment.

López Obrador has emphasized the honest and professional character of Bárcena in case a “straight” person is needed to succeed Claver-Carone: “Mexico has a proposal: Alicia Bárcena.

She was at the UN, she was director of ECLAC for a long time and she is an exceptional woman, highly respected, with very good relations with all governments”, she affirmed.

The proposal by the Government of Mexico comes after the opening of the process to appoint a new president that the IDB opened this Wednesday after the controversial departure of its now former director.

Alicia Bárcena, born in Mexico City in 1952, was the head of ECLAC from 2008 until March 2022, during this time her performance earned her the status of being considered the most influential secretary since the time of Raúl Prebisch, the Argentine who led the organization. between 1950 and 1963.
