A reporter for a local Florida television network caught the attention of viewers Wednesday when the condom on her microphone appeared on the screen while she was on the air as she stood in the midst of Hurricane Ian battering the state.

NBC2 reporter Kayla Geller was reporting the storm from a parking lot in Fort Myers when viewers were distracted by the unusual rubber casing on her microphone.

""NBC 2 practices safe mic reporting during Hurricane Ian," one viewer tweeted. "@NBCNewsNow really took this woman out holding a condom-wrapped mic in front of her face," another viewer wrote.

And this is her explanation

Geller was quick to defend her method in a story she posted on her Instagram.

"A lot of people ask what's on my microphone," she said.

"Yes. It's what you think it is. It's a condom. It helps protect the equipment. You shouldn't get these microphones wet. There's a lot of wind and a lot of rain, so we have to do what we can do and that means, for example, putting a condom on the microphone."

Geller's colleague, ABC7's Jeff Butera, shared a close-up photo of Geller's microphone and tweeted: "We practice safe reporting on the hurricane."

"Yes, it's a condom," he continued.

"There is nothing better than sealing the microphone. My colleague answers a lot of questions. A moment of laughter in this nasty storm."

** WE PRACTICE SAFE HURRICANE REPORTING **

Yes, it's a condom.

Nothing better to waterproof a microphone.

My Waterman Broadcasting colleague @kylagaler has been fielding lots of questions, haha.

Hurricane Ian - one of the strongest storms recorded in recent decades in the United States - reached the coast of Florida last night (Wednesday).

The powerful storm is defined as "extremely dangerous", and in category 4 - one level lower than the strongest category 5.

More than two million residents have already been cut off from electricity and many floods hit the first areas hit by the hurricane.

However, the peak of the storm has yet to hit the Florida coast, with the most powerful rain and surge still expected to hit the coastal area.
