Just over three decades ago, when Mexico was preparing to sign a free trade agreement with the United States and Canada, Americans consumed, on average and per person, approximately half a kilo of Mexican Hass avocado per year.

Today, each person in that country consumes 4.5 kilos a year, according to a study by Texas A&M University distributed by the company Aguacates de México.

The study reveals how it was that the so-called "green gold" went from being a seasonal ingredient with which tons of guacamole are made to accompany the Super Bowl, to becoming an increasingly common and habitual product on American tables.

Among other factors, he cites the increase in the Hispanic and Caribbean population in the United States;

the introduction of this product in American fast food and restaurants;

the greater awareness of the consumer when purchasing healthy foods and the preference of importers of Mexican avocados over Peruvian or Colombian ones, due to their quality, size and greater conservation.

"Nine out of ten avocados consumed in the United States are Mexican of the Hass variety," says the study from the Texas university, noting that "they are the most widely available."

In addition, the avocado has positioned itself among the three agri-food products with the highest export value in Mexico, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

"The Mexican agri-food products with the highest export value were: beer, with US$3,474 million; tequila and mezcal, US$2,498 million; avocado, US$2,112 million; fresh or chilled tomato, US$1,525 million, and bakery products , with US$ 1,235 million," the statement said.

Álvaro Luque, president of Avocados from Mexico, adds that the avocado has three characteristics that few products can boast: it is healthy, tasty and sociable.

“It is very easy to find products on the market that can be very social for parties but are not very healthy, or products that are healthy but not tasty.

In our case, we have the perfect combination of the three factors, and this has made our campaign go down so well, not only in the Hispanic market, but also in the American market, which has adopted this fruit as if it were their own." Luke says.

He adds that, in less than a decade, Mexican Hass avocado exports to the United States doubled, going from 600,000 tons in 2013 to 1.2 million tons in 2021.

"In the last seven years we have managed to double the market for Mexican avocado products in the United States.

This has been in terms of volume and spillage, which is what we are measuring with this study.

We are reaching an economic impact of US$ 11,000 million a year”, says Luque.

The study, which makes comparisons based on fiscal years from July to June, highlights that the value of these movements is reflected in the US economy.

It details that the contribution to the total production of the United States increased almost 560% from US$ 1,700 million in 2012 to US$ 11,200 million in 2022, while the contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of the United States increased almost 410% when going from US$1.2 billion in 2012 to US$6.1 billion in 2022.

Labor income, taxes and jobs derived from the import, distribution and sale of Mexican avocados also reported exponential increases in the last decade, of 465%, 665% and 418% respectively, according to the study.

It also specifies that each dollar of Mexican Hass avocado imports in fiscal year 2021-2022 generated US$2.79 in production, US$1.51 in Gross Domestic Product and US$0.98 in labor income.

“Each million dollars of imports generated 14.5 jobs in the United States.

The taxes generated by imports amounted to 32.9% of the value of imported avocados”, he adds.

Finally, Luque rules out that this growth is temporary and predicts a long and promising future for Mexican avocados in the United States.
