Dormouse, sand lizard, bat and tree frog have moved away: the construction site for the extension of the U-Bahn line 6 from Großhadern Clinic to Martinsried has been prepared.

Now the interim storage areas for the excavation are set up.

The tunnel construction starts in February.

Martinsried

- The Dr.

Schober Gesellschaft für Landschaftsplanung from Freising is responsible for the environmental construction supervision of the major project with almost a kilometer of tunnel and a new underground station in Martinsried.

Involved in the planning since 2010, the preparations required under nature conservation law for the start of the main construction work have been going more intensively for the past two years.

In order to give the tree frog a new home, two ponds each were built to the south and north at the beginning of 2021.

In the meantime there are frog spawn there, last summer large numbers of tadpoles could be observed in the northern frog waters, as Luisa Ruß from the office of Dr.

Schober explained at an on-site visit on Thursday.

However, the southern ponds are suffering from the fact that goldfish have already been released twice, which eat the spawn and have to be removed.

Dormouse hibernation

At the beginning of 2022, the felling work in the vicinity of the future subway line was completed.

Trees and bushes were removed on 40,000 square meters.

Where there were occurrences of the dormouse, large machines were not used.

In order not to disturb them in their hibernation in their hole underground, the trees were cut down and pulled out with a winch.

Individual trees with woodpecker and bat holes remained standing until recently.

“They were felled when there were no more birds and no bats in them,” says Russ.

Boxes for birds, bats and dormouse are now attached to the left and right of the construction area, and bushes that bear fruit are also planted.

“Little by little, everything was removed from the future construction site.

That led to the animals migrating,” says Russ.

As one of the last measures, since mid-September there have been black slabs with small gravel mounds in front of the tree protection fence in relevant areas.

The sand lizard climbs out of the construction site over the gravel hill, but cannot come back because of the slabs and looks for another shelter.

Backfilled gravel pit

The Free State is providing U-Bahn Martinsried Projektmanagement GmbH & Co.KG (PMG), which is building the subway on behalf of the municipality, with fields north of the Biomedical Center (BMC) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University as interim storage space.

There, as well as on a second interim storage area provided by the Max Planck Society, explosive ordnance research will begin in the coming week, "so that you know that nothing is dormant and nothing is exploding," says Dimitri Steinke, PMG Managing Director.

On Monday, October 10, the excavators are supposed to roll up to remove the topsoil on the northern area between BMC and Würmtalstrasse.

There, the contaminated excavation is to be temporarily stored after on-site sampling until disposal.

Based on the exploration and planning results, PMG expects 182,000 cubic meters.

The route crosses a backfilled gravel pit over a length of around 500 meters. Conditions from the planning approval stipulate that a water catchment basin be built to prevent washed-out substances from getting into the ground.

Work is scheduled to begin in the first week of November.

The "clean" excavated material, which will later be used to backfill the excavation pit, is stored on the Max Planck site.

If the weather permits, Leonhard Weiss GmbH will start the main construction work in February.

Then the excavators roll along the future route.

The pedestrian and cycle path connection between the Martinsrieder institutes and Großhadern will remain in place throughout the multi-year construction phase, but will be relocated as required.
