Argentina will celebrate Mother's Day this year on Sunday, October 16, within the framework of a tradition of religious origin that differentiates it from a good part of the countries of Latin America, Spain and the United States.

In Argentine territory, mothers are celebrated on the third Sunday of each October, which in 2022 falls on the 16th. Therefore, the date varies from year to year.

In most countries in the region, meanwhile, Mother's Day is celebrated in May.

This is also the case in Spain and the United States.

Other exceptions are Costa Rica and Panama, which commemorate it in August and December respectively, in accordance with certain religious dates.

The history of Mother's Day in Argentina dates back to 1931, according to La Nación and other Argentine media, and it also has a religious component.

Pope Pius XI determined that year that October 11 would be dedicated to the "Divine Maternity of Mary", the dogma that postulates that Mary is the true mother of God for Catholicism, as Aciprensa explains here.

That dogma was defined at the Council of Ephesus in the year 431.

Based on this Catholic tradition, Argentina would have set the celebration for mothers in the month of October, according to local reports.

Its origin, in this sense, is quite different from the one that led to the official recognition of Mother's Day in the United States in contemporary times.

This occurred in 1914 after the signing of a bill by then President Woodrow Wilson thanks to Anna Jarvis, who commemorated the first Mother's Day in the country.

After her mother's death in 1905, Jarvis paid her a small tribute on May 12, 1907, at a Methodist church in West Virginia.

She then campaigned for this holiday to be recognized.

Last year Argentina celebrated Mother's Day again with face-to-face meetings, after a 2020 in which meetings in many provinces were prohibited within the framework of restrictions due to the pandemic.
