Africa mocks European hypocrisy on energy

SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE - Initially perceived as a threat to the achievement of climate objectives, the African continent is now seen as a potential supplier of energy by industrialized countries.

The South African Minister of the Environment, Barbara Creecy, could not help throwing a little spade in the direction of Europe.

She pointed out that the same countries that had criticized her country for its high coal consumption are now burning more of it themselves.

"Wouldn't that be a little hypocritical?"

Indeed, one of the absurdities observed in these turbulent times is that South Africa's coal exports to Europe increased eightfold (!) in the first half of the year compared to the same period l previous year as a result of the ban on Russian coal imports.

If the South African rail operator Transnet were not antiquated (like all public companies in the country), this figure would probably be much higher.
