Nothing less than a call for help comes from the Munich animal shelter.

There are full places in all departments.

There are waiting lists for new donation animals.

The lack of skilled workers and high energy costs exacerbate the situation.

Munich – Four paws against loneliness: In the lockdowns, many people bought a pet.

Carelessly and with bitter consequences for the Zamperl and velvet paws.

Many of them ended up in the animal shelter after the end of the Corona measure.

All places are taken there, and there are now even waiting lists.

Here, too, the situation is made worse by high energy costs.

"We animal shelters are in great danger," it says in a call for help.

Munich animal shelter: waiting lists in all departments

"Our Munich animal shelter has been at the limit for months," explains their spokeswoman Kristina Berchtold.

"Every week we get more requests for submissions than we can accommodate." There are now waiting lists in all departments.

Then: owners who have to be patient until a place becomes available for their animal.

"In the dog area, for example, there are now 70 people waiting on this list." This means that it can now be a whole week before a Zamperl can be handed in.

A situation that has occurred not only in the state capital, but throughout Bavaria and in all federal states.

Kron is one of the fur balls that have only recently been living in the Munich animal shelter.

The Chow Chow arrived there in July - in poor condition, poorly trained and with health problems.

A package that is difficult to find a home with.

Munich animal shelter: the situation is coming to a head dramatically

Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Association, calls for clear rules for breeding and husbandry from politicians, as well as a ban on online animal trade.

A shortage of skilled workers and the energy crisis would contribute to the animal shelters going into existential difficulties in the coming months.

“Politicians, administration and the public often take it for granted that animal shelters are contact points for animals and animal owners in need.

But given the precarious situation in many places, that can hardly be guaranteed.”

The situation in the houses that his umbrella organization represents is dramatic.

And have come to a head in recent years due to the "political ignorance" of practical animal welfare.

"Federal, state and local governments must help together," emphasizes Schröder.

"We need a bailout!"
