Ettenhofener Straße should become a bicycle street.

The Weßlinger municipal council decided this in 2018.

This week he overturned the decision.

Weßling

- A municipal council resolution from 2018 provides for the introduction of two bicycle lanes in Weßling.

One of them, on Meilinger Weg, has already been opened, the second concerns the route from Oberpfaffenhofen to Weßling - and this should suddenly not become a bicycle road, a narrow majority of the municipal councils decided on Tuesday, without the four-year-old decision being formally made beforehand cancel.

Whether this is possible is now being legally examined.

Visibly pleased, Mayor Michael Sturm opened the cycle lane on Meilinger Weg a good two years ago.

Since then, a maximum of 30 km/h has been allowed between the sports hall and the market place, cyclists have priority and are allowed to ride next to each other.

Cyclists should also set the pace on Ettenhofener Strasse to Karpfenwinkel and Uferweg, the future school route for elementary school students to the new school building.

The implementation was once stopped by the legal situation: In the past, bicycle traffic had to be the predominant type of traffic to set up a bicycle street, but in a census in 2019 only every fifth road user was a cyclist.

Gerhard Hippmann (Greens) quoted the ADFC as saying that an "expected high bicycle traffic density, only a subordinate importance for motor vehicle traffic or a high network importance for bicycle traffic is enough".

This applies to the area after the school is completed, according to the draft resolution on Tuesday.

In order to set an example for cycling, the municipal council should decide on a bicycle zone for the entire route.

However, this failed because in such areas right before left automatically applies.

A rule that Christina Mörtl-Diemer (BG/CSU) described as "dangerous".

Because the section contains some confusing places.

"There are no problems on Schulstrasse," countered Sturm, looking at the cycle lane that had already been cleared.

Christian Zollner (Freie Wahler) got "big stomach ache" at the thought of a bicycle zone.

He thought of the "steep stretch on Ettenhofener Straße".

Günther Schöpp (BG/CSU) reminded of the many signs that would have to be put up.

"Instead of 25, 26 signs would be re-erected," Sturm countered.

Andreas Lechermann (BG/CSU) saw "generally no added value" in a bicycle zone or bicycle street.

He often travels the route by car.

"Even now I can't overtake a cyclist because I can't keep the 1.50 meter safety distance."

Mörtl-Diemer also pointed out that stop-and-go traffic would be an additional burden for local residents and that Gautinger Strasse would be overloaded as an alternative route.

They prefer deceleration through the measures that have already been decided, such as lane narrowing, pictograms or a permanently installed speed camera.

"Nothing has happened to this day," she said.

In the end, the bicycle zone failed unanimously.

The committee also rejected a bicycle road for the southern route with a vote of 8:9.

This in turn caused confusion because the positive decision from 2018 had not been overturned.

Stefan Diebl, spokesman for the district office, said yesterday: "We have already been asked by the community.

It's not easy to answer that with yes or no.

We have to check that legally.”
