Ouagadougou-SANA
The authorities of the Republic of Burkina Faso denied the occurrence of a military coup attempt in the country, pointing out that some elements of the armed forces had committed what they called an attempt to perpetuate division.
"In light of the turbulent situation that has arisen following the movement of specific elements of the armed forces, we call on the population to exercise the utmost caution and calm in the face of some information circulated on social media," the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Paul Henry Sanogo Damiba, said in a statement carried by Sputnik.
Damiba indicated that negotiations are underway to restore calm and tranquility, adding: "The enemy that attacks our country only wants division among the people of Burkina Faso to accomplish its destabilizing work, and therefore we must remain united for the victory of peace and security."
In turn, government spokesman Lionel Bilgo announced that what had happened was an internal crisis in the army for demands related to certain bonuses and salaries, and discussions are continuing in order to reach a smooth outcome.
This morning, Burkina Faso witnessed security tension after hearing gunfire in a military barracks in the capital, Ouagadougou, followed by the suspension of official television broadcasts for several hours before resuming broadcasting and broadcasting documentaries without addressing the situation.
