Because of the energy crisis, the flat-sharing community goes without electricity once a week.

The bar not only wants to save energy, but also move closer together.

Cologne – The residential community in Cologne is probably one of the best-known bars in downtown Cologne.

After all, the community with its unusual facilities not only has a very special atmosphere.

There are always special events taking place in the bar - for example, a sing-along evening with Kölsch beer or a podcast recording with Hazel Brugger.

Now the flat-sharing community is showing its creativity even during the energy crisis - and is launching the "Collective switch off - against the current!" campaign, reports 24RHEIN.

The residential community: Special campaign for the energy crisis

► Once a week the electricity in the bar is switched off at 8 p.m.

► Instead of music from loudspeakers there is a pianist, instead of lamps there are candles.

► The refrigerator is replaced by a bathtub with ice cubes.

► Next date: Tuesday, October 11, 2022. After that every Tuesday

► The city of Cologne has also defined various savings measures in the wake of the energy crisis.

Cologne: The residential community switches off the light and music – because of the energy crisis

"Once a week - every Tuesday - we turn off the fuses," says shared apartment owner Guido Bungart in an interview with 24RHEIN.

"Since the topic of the energy crisis is so high, we thought that this fits in well with the times." It starts on October 11th.

At 8 p.m. sharp, it’s time to turn off the fuses.

Instead of lamps, there are candles, and no more music comes out of the loudspeakers.

However, things do not remain completely quiet in the shared flat.

"But we have a pianist who is responsible for the music," explains Bungart.

The campaign also influences the drinks menu, because the refrigerator with a power connection is also dispensed with.

Instead, there's a bathtub with ice cubes and only a limited selection of drinks.

"Of course, there will still be beer, wine and soft drinks." And the guests are also brought on board.

"We're asking everyone to turn off their phones or put them away."

Energy crisis in Cologne: Bar switches off electricity – and wants to “enjoy the moment more”

After all, behind the action is not just a pure power-saving measure.

“The few kilowatt hours that we save are good and important.

But there is much more to us,” says the owner of the shared flat.

"It's not just about taking away, but about adding something to it: being more in the here and now.

Live the moment more.”

The idea of shared accommodation is not entirely new.

Even before and during Corona, there were already occasional special evenings in the bar. In the course of the energy crisis, however, the event is now taking place weekly, according to Bungart.
