Günter Helfenbein was just as well known and valued as the lessee of the Forsterner Hirschbachwirt and as a musician in the band "The Searcher".

He was only 63 years old.

Forstern

– “You don't have to worry, I'll be right back home.” With these words, Günter Helfenbein encouraged his partner Lydia Schuster when he was on palliative care in Freising.

It's been less than a fortnight now.

Despite advanced cancer, he was an optimist and fought like a lion – to the end.

The “singing landlord”, as he was called in his home town of Forstern, died last Friday at the age of 63.

Restaurateur and Musician - Band "The Searcher"

Günter Helfenbein combined two passions: music and gastronomy.

Earlier as the landlord of the Forsterner Sportgaststätte and later in the Hirschbachwirt, he lived out both passions equally.

In his restaurants he regularly brought cabaret to the village, invited Monika Gruber, Roland Hefter or Lizzy Aumeier to the small Forstern.

And he was regularly on stage himself - mostly as a drummer and singer in his band "The Searcher".

The fire for percussion blazed in him early on.

As a seven-year-old boy, Günter Helfenbein put his father's hat on his head, gathered up his mother's pots and drummed wildly on them with wooden spoons.

His older sister Waltraud Kaiser tells about it.

Günter Helfenbein: Early love for drums

The enamel pots suffered from a few quirks, she recalls.

But the parents didn't care.

They were proud of their eager son.

The mother in particular, she always had a particularly close relationship with her Günter.

The two sisters – in addition to Waltraud Kaiser also the younger one, Sieglinde Leitmannstetter – were rather annoyed “by the action” that the brother was staging.

There was a lot of action in Günter Helfenbein's life.

He was not a man for idleness.

"That was lost time for him," says Lydia Schuster.

You should have persuaded him to go on vacation.

Vouchers for a massage or brunch have been sitting in a drawer for years.

"When he had a day off, he didn't lie down on the sofa, but rather cleaned up the kitchen," says his only son Florian Helfenbein (33).

If you wanted something from him, it was best to come to the restaurant.

"Important things were always discussed while working in the inn," remembers son Florian.

He only took time off for his music.

Visited concerts from Elton John to Shakira or cranked up his Beatles or country music at home.

And he has toured the region with The Searcher and other bands.

He didn't particularly like being in the limelight.

Better to stay in the background, down-to-earth, hands-on.

He was reserved, almost introverted, never pushy.

His announcements were famous for their brevity: "It's nice that you're all here.

Let's start now,” Lydia Schuster recalls.

After his training as a chef in the Munich chimney and a few years as an employee, the Forsterner, who apart from a brief interlude in Gelting, which is not far away, has always lived in the community, set up his own sports restaurant.

Restaurant will continue

After his divorce, he met and fell in love with his Lydia there.

Together with her, he took over the Hirschbachwirt seven years ago.

Even if Günter Helfenbein is missing at all levels, she wants to continue running the traditional restaurant with her 34-year-old daughter Sophie Schlaffer, who has been part of the team for many years - "in his sense", as Schuster says.

It will be unlocked again on Wednesday.

A good two years ago, Günter Helfenbein became a grandfather.

His grandson was his pride.

"He would have given anything for him," says son Florian.

And little Finn is already emulating Günter Helfenbein in one respect: just like grandpa used to, he likes to dig out the big pots from the gastro kitchen and drums on them with fervor.
