Schongau – When planning the new Staufer elementary school, a maximum of 400 students were expected.

Currently, however, there are already over 500 primary school students, and the lack of space is already acute.

The Köhlerstadel should now bring relief to the situation.

"We definitely have a need for action," made city master builder Sebastian Dietrich clear in the city council on Tuesday.

The Staufer elementary school was initially planned with 17 classrooms.

Due to the refugee crisis from 2015, the number of classrooms was increased to 19, according to Dietrich.

The trend continued thereafter.

Schongau was and is affected by the influx of refugees, as well as the trend reversal in the number of births.

At the moment there are two more rooms in temporary use as classrooms, so there are currently 21.

In cooperation with the district office, a solution for the lack of space at the primary school from this school year was worked out by renting rooms at the Realschule and the Gymnasium.

However, this was not possible due to a short-term change in the specifications for class formation by the Ministry of Education.

The school year had to begin without renting additional rooms.

In addition, there is a legal right to all-day care from the 2026 school year.

In the long term, the expansion of the middle school, which was planned earlier and then postponed, would have to be realized, Dietrich made clear to the committee.

However, this can only be tackled after the general renovation of this.

However, this is not to be expected before 2025.

A reallocation of the school district in cooperation with the municipality of Altenstadt also fails due to the lack of space at the primary school there.

The master builder sees an obvious solution in the truest sense of the word in the neighboring Köhlerstadel.

Although this is used by Juze and the town band, it still has a certain amount of unused space.

The first floor and the attic are currently only used as storage rooms.

According to Dietrich, a total of around 580 square meters would be available here.

In addition, some of the infrastructure is already in place and the building is also in the immediate vicinity of the primary school.

"It would be a short-term solution," summarized Dietrich at the meeting.

"In the end, we have no other choice," Ilona Böse (SPD) spoke up.

She asked for the rooms to be designed to be as multifunctional as possible, so that not only classrooms but also other uses would be possible.

Main office manager Bettina Schade also referred to the kindergartens.

"There won't be significantly fewer children and elementary school isn't enough for us right now," said Schade.

Gregor Schuppe (ALS), himself a teacher at the elementary school, was convinced that the Köhlerstadel would be needed and in the future the extension to the middle school would also be needed.

Kornelia Funke (CSU) wanted to know whether all of this could really be realized by 2026.

"It will be very sporty," the city master builder made clear, but thinks it's possible.

“There is no faster solution.” Temporary rental containers are out of the question because of the costs.

This is money that fizzles out, says Dietrich.

The city council unanimously gave the green light to enter the planning process at Köhlerstadel.
