Pensioner Renate Sloma's gas bill has increased tenfold.

A shock for the 82-year-old.

But a simple trick helped her with the high gas prices.

Berlin – In the coming months, many gas customers are threatened with a real cost shock.

Because the suppliers are turning the price screw.

In many cases, existing customers have to pay up to almost 300 percent more.

The pensioner Renate Sloma has also hit the price increase with full force.

Gas price: Pensioner should pay tenfold monthly

From November, the 82-year-old Berliner will pay ten times as much for gas as before.

"The first thing I had to do was take a blood pressure tablet," Sloma tells

RBB

.

883 euros: That's how much she should pay monthly for heating - even though she already lives very frugally.

For example, the heating is only turned on briefly in the morning to take a shower.

The pensioner already expected that there would be an increase.

She would have expected to have to pay around 130 euros instead of the previous 85 euros.

But the new price makes Sloma despair.

"I saved something.

But when I add up rent, insurance and everything else, it's gone down to the last penny," she says.

Sloma's daughter then emailed the gas supplier Mitgas from Brandenburg.

However, she waited in vain for an answer.

She said no one could be reached by phone either.

The gas supplier finally responds to

RBB

's request and explains that the natural gas "must be procured at current, extremely high market prices".

Gas price: if the price increases, the consumer advice center advises terminating the existing contract

Finally, the pensioner turned to the consumer center.

There it was explained to her that Mitgas may increase the price provided that the right to change the price is stipulated in the contract.

But there is still a solution.

Because in the event of price increases, customers have a special right of termination.

The consumer center advises Sloma to terminate the existing contract with Mitgas and not to look for a new supplier.

This means that it automatically falls under the basic service – with significantly lower prices.

Here, a kilowatt hour will cost 15 cents from October.

For the pensioner, this still means a doubling of the gas price, but this is probably much easier to cope with than a tenfold increase.

"I was hoping for a tip like that," says the Berliner. "If that's true, then I'm happy and relieved."
