There are more and more of them, bigger and bigger, making life increasingly difficult for the fire brigade.

Parked cars keep making it difficult for the rescuers to make any headway.

Germering – Last weekend they even had to walk to the site.

It is Saturday evening when the volunteers are called to Gudrunstrasse.

Relatives were worried about one of their loved ones - the firefighters should open the apartment door.

But they don't get as far as Gudrunstrasse.

It's over in Lohengrinstrasse.

Cars are parked to the right and left.

The fire engine, which is almost 2.55 meters wide, can't get any further.

Without further ado, the helpers continue on foot to the site.

It's not the first time firefighters have gotten stuck.

"Cars are getting wider, but the roads aren't," says fire chief Christian Haugg.

In addition, the number of vehicles is increasing - and with it the situations in which things get tight.

If possible, the fire brigade naturally shows consideration for the cars.

The situation is different when it is a matter of life and death - for example when there is a fire and people are in danger.

"Then we drive through, even if the exterior mirrors fly," says Haugg.

The Unterpfaffenhofen fire brigade also knows the problem.

"There are many places where it gets very tight," says Christian Ruder, commander of the Unterpfaffenhofen firefighters.

He has been with the fire service for 24 years and has observed the phenomenon with growing concern.

For Ruder, the densification of residential areas also plays a role.

His calculation: where more people live, there are also more cars around.

This is one of the reasons why the helpers deliberately drive into smaller streets during practice runs so that the drivers can learn how to negotiate obstacles.

Like his colleagues from the Germeringer fire brigade, Ruder also appeals to residents to leave enough space on the street.

At least three meters

It must be at least three meters, explains Jochen Franz from the city's legal office.

Compliance is also checked regularly.

In addition, the streets of the city are regularly checked to see whether large vehicles can still get through.

This is also important for buses or garbage disposal.

If necessary, no parking zones would be set up.

Incidentally, if a parked car is damaged by the fire brigade, it is not certain that the owner will be compensated for the damage, explains Jochen Franz. If in doubt, this must be clarified under civil law.

It could well be that one stays at his own expense.

Incidentally, the stuck fire engine on Saturday evening had no consequences.

The apartment that the helpers opened was empty.
