Putin Declares Illegal Annexation of Four Ukraine Regions in Defiance of International Law

2022-09-30T13:30:11.999Z

Following the Russian president's announcement, the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions will be part of Russia. It is the largest territorial takeover in post-war Europe: it comes after referendums widely seen as rigged.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched the process of annexation of some regions of Ukraine saying he will sign laws to absorb them despite international condemnation and said he will protect the newly incorporated regions using "all available means".

In a speech preceding the signing ceremony of the treaty making four Ukrainian regions part of Russia, Putin warned that his country would never leave the occupied areas and would protect them as part of its sovereign territory.

He urged Ukraine to sit down for talks to end the fighting, but sternly warned that Russia would never hand over control of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Furthermore, he accused the West of fueling the hostilities as part of his plan to turn Russia into a "colony" and a "multitude of slaves."

The ceremony comes three days after the completion of Kremlin-orchestrated referendums to join Russia that were dismissed by Kyiv and the West as a brazen land grab, carried out by force and based on lies.

The United States, Ukraine and

other Western countries have condemned this as an illegal land

grab, and have vowed to retaliate with sanctions.

"All options are on the table when it comes to imposing sanctions on Russia," State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said Thursday.

Russia says it is simply a democratic decision by people living in Ukraine's eastern and southern regions, a claim few in the West take seriously.

The move is seen as a broader escalation by Putin after suffering a series of battlefield defeats due to a lightning counteroffensive waged by Ukrainian troops.

In addition to announcing the annexation, Putin partially mobilized his army, which has caused various protests and an exodus of Russians fleeing the draft, and has also increased his nuclear threats against Ukraine and the West.

Trying to annex these four regions is seen by many analysts as a desperate attempt to regain control, with the embattled Russian leader even suggesting he would use his nuclear arsenal to defend the territory.

"It seems quite pathetic to me. The Ukrainians are doing something, taking steps in the real world, while the Kremlin is building a kind of virtual reality, unable to respond in the real world," said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter and Political analyst.

"People understand that politics is now on the battlefield. The important thing is who is going forward and who is going back. In that sense, the Kremlin cannot offer anything comforting to the Russians," he added.
