The planned high-speed cycle connection between Fürstenfeldbruck and Munich would have to overcome a number of hurdles if it were to be realised.

And it would be expensive – but would make economic sense.

Fürstenfeldbruck - This emerges from a feasibility study that has now been presented to the responsible committee of the district council.

The basic idea is based on building a four meter wide cycle path essentially along the S 4.

It should primarily be used by everyday cyclists and commuters.

The route would be nine kilometers long.

It would cost around twelve million euros to produce them, or even 24 million if bridges were built over the forecourts of the stations in Eichenau and Puchheim.

Current inflation not included

The current price increases are not yet included in these sums, as a spokesman for the planner commissioned by the district now said in the district council's environmental committee.

Another problem: Officially, it is completely unclear at the moment whether, how and when the S-Bahn will be expanded.

The plans would therefore have to be coordinated with the railways, according to the feasibility study.

The dependency on the S-Bahn is the catch, said the planner in the committee.

Another ambiguity: Who is responsible for the construction?

It cannot be the district, the implementation would be the responsibility of the individual municipalities according to the current status.

The economic benefit in the district of Fürstenfeldbruck is given with two values: 0.68 with the two bridges and 1.82 without the bridges.

The benefit increases immensely when Munich is on board.

Minimum score to receive buffs is greater than 1.0.

The line begins in Fürstenfeldbruck and runs via Tulip Street to Emmering.

Here she would have to walk through the residential area, since Emmering rejected another variant.

In Eichenau, the cycle connection would run north of the railway tracks to Puchheim and from there continue via Roggensteiner Straße, Bahnhof and Aubinger Weg to Munich.

Around 3,500 cyclists could use the route from Fürstenfeldbruck every day, according to a forecast.

The total potential including the city of Munich is estimated at 5150 bikes per day.

The S-Bahn expansion

Among other things, the tour through a residential area in Emmering and above all the dependence on the S-Bahn expansion were critically questioned in the meeting.

Puchheim's mayor and SPD district councilor Norbert Seidl reported that his city had already acquired land along Roggensteiner Straße.

This is far enough away from the S-Bahn line.

Seidl: "We shouldn't wait until a decision has been made as to whether to expand to three or four tracks."

Hans Märkl (Greens, Landsberied) reported on problems between farmers and cyclists on farm roads, which actually arose because of agriculture.

In the meantime, however, cyclists no longer went to the side.

"Then you stay where you are with your tractor.

You can't zam anyone."

Jan Halbauer (Greens, Bruck) pushed for quick implementation, but was ultimately satisfied with the fact that the district wanted to continue coordinating and promoting the issue, especially in view of the question of the property developer.

This task falls to the cycling officer of the Brucker district.

Now, among other things, the opinion of the municipalities should be obtained.

A PV roof, please (ironic comment)

The cycle expressway idea is so incredibly innovative and so impressive that other ideas must be allowed, which of course may not have to be taken very seriously.

But if we are going to build massive sealed routes and build two cyclist bridges over two train stations, then we should actually be able to think about a roof over the routes.

Even better: an enclosure.

Apparently, money is no longer an issue - and one advantage is obvious: the roof and side walls could be covered with PV panels and thus generate even more electricity than the climate-neutral ice rink dreamed of in Bruck with electricity overproduction could ever do.

With such effectiveness, the floor of the expressway could also be equipped with underfloor heating.

Then the thousands of commuters who cycle to work even in winter – or let’s call it more elegant – would at least have warm tires under their icy feet.

Bottom line: you have to be allowed to think about something.

Even if it is better not to take the resulting plans too seriously.
