Spain receives October with a 'veranillo de San Miguel' that will last at least until Wednesday

As of Saturday, high pressures will dominate and the mass of cold air that has knocked down the thermometers on Thursday and Friday will be replaced by another of subtropical origin that will raise temperatures between 5° and 10° above normal.

This Friday, the last day of September, the unusually cool atmosphere continues, especially in the northwest of the peninsula, where the maximums are between 5° and 10° degrees below normal.

But this situation will not last long, as announced by Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet): as of Saturday, high pressures will dominate and the mass of cold air causing low temperatures will be replaced by a mass of air contrary, warmer and subtropical in origin, which will raise the thermometers to between 5° and 10° above normal.

It will be the famous

summer of San Miguel

or the quince, which is three days late this year, but will not miss its appointment with autumn in Spain.

This warm weather will last at least until Wednesday and, less intensely, the rest of next week.

The cause of the low temperatures is the passage of a frontal system that has swept the Peninsula from north to south and the entry of cold air from high latitudes, which already knocked down the thermometers on Thursday and left the first snowfall of autumn in the Pyrenees and even in Sierra Nevada.

This Friday, the maximum will remain, again, between 15 ° and 20 ° in general.

In the center and northern half, it will be cool or even cold at dawn and the minimum will fall below 10°, especially this Friday and Saturday, in large areas of the interior of the peninsula.

In the northern plateau and central moors it will drop below 5° and there will also be frosts in high mountain areas.

During the weekend of September 30 to October 2 there will be a significant improvement in weather.

On Friday the 30th there are still showers and storms in Catalonia/Balearic Islands, which may be locally strong and persistent rains in E Cantabrian.

But from Saturday to Wednesday, the tortilla will be turned around and temperatures will begin to rise, so much so that on Wednesday they can touch or exceed 35° in points of the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys and 30° in the southern Galicia and in the southern half of the peninsula, Del Campo details.

Temperatures will generally be between 25° and 30° between Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in large areas of the interior and the Mediterranean area.

Early mornings, however, will continue to be cool, especially in the northern half, where it will remain below 10°.

These days a very typical phenomenon of the anticyclonic days of autumn will take place: the great thermal amplitude between the early morning and the central hours.

That difference on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday can be at least 20° or even more in inland areas such as Cuenca and Teruel, where on Sunday they will have a minimum of 6° and a maximum of 26°, in Ciudad Real 9°/ 29° and in Salamanca 7°/27°, exemplifies the spokesman for Aemet.

As of Thursday, temperatures will drop slightly, but will continue to be high, especially in the center and west of the Peninsula, with values between 4° and 6° higher than usual.

"The

summer of San Miguel

will continue somewhat extended," explains Del Campo.

A dana will leave rain in the southern peninsular third

As for rainfall, this Friday it will continue to snow in the Pyrenees above 1,800/2,000 meters and the rains will continue in the Cantabrian area, although weaker and more scattered than the previous day, except in the Basque Country and northern Navarra, where they can still be abundant.

Strong storms are also expected in the Mediterranean area, especially in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which will decrease throughout the afternoon.

As of Saturday, October arrives with stable weather in general, but on Sunday there may be stormy showers in the southern third of the peninsula, especially in eastern Andalusia, Murcia and Alicante, due to a dana (isolated depression at high levels) that has isolated North Africa.

This dana may move to the south of the Peninsula on Monday and leave stormy showers in eastern Andalusia, Murcia, south of the Valencian Community, east of Castilla-La Mancha and south of Aragón.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, they will be restricted to the Balearic Islands.

"In general, it would be scattered showers, although it cannot be ruled out that some may have greater intensity, but it does not seem that it will be a particularly adverse situation," explains Del Campo.

As of Thursday, the weather is likely to remain stable,

although stormy showers may appear in the eastern third of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands.

It can also rain lightly in Galicia and nearby areas.

Meanwhile, the Canary Islands return to normal after a historic month of September in terms of rain.

The trade wind regime will prevail, which will blow strongly in the most exposed areas and will drag clouds to the north of the islands with greater relief, with light drizzles this Friday, which will be somewhat more abundant on Saturday.

From Sunday the skies will be clearer and temperatures will rise clearly.

The hydrological year closes with a precipitation deficit of 26%

The hydrological year, which began on October 1, closes this Friday and, in the absence of counting the rains of the last days, until the 27th, 473 liters per square meter had been collected, 26% less than the average value of the historical series, which starts in 1961 and is 635 litres.

Everything indicates, according to Del Campo, that this year will become the third driest in the series, after 2004-2005, with 415 liters, and 2011-2012, with 474.

From October 2021 to September 2022 it has been an "extraordinary" period in terms of low rainfall and this September has also been dry.

Despite the rains in the Bay of Biscay, the Mediterranean area and the Canary Islands, it has rained around 30% less than normal.

The accumulated amounts are "below their normal values in much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands", especially in the western half and in the northeastern quadrant.

On the contrary, the normal values are exceeded from the south of Almería to the Ebro valley, points of the Cantabrian coast, the Pitiusas, the northeast of the island of Mallorca and large areas of the Canary Islands.

During the last week, the rainfall has affected most of the Peninsula, except for part of Castilla y León and the center, and the two archipelagos, especially the Canary Islands with the passage of tropical storm

Hermine

, which left amounts close to 200 liters in the eastern half of the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria and El Hierro.

The Aemet spokesman also highlights the accumulations of more than 100 liters per square meter in the east of Alicante and Valencia, in more isolated points of Catalonia, in the northeast of Ibiza and in the south of Mallorca.
