The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns: Israelis with Russian citizenship may be recruited into the Russian army Israel today

The clarification comes in light of the fact that quite a few Israelis who hold Russian citizenship are now staying in Russia

Today (Friday), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a clarification to the public according to which Israeli citizens who also hold Russian citizenship are exposed to military recruitment if they enter Russian territory, in accordance with the new recruitment regulations recently announced by President Putin.

The clarification comes in light of the fact that quite a few Israelis who hold Russian citizenship are staying in Russia even now.

Since the announcement of the new conscription law, hundreds of thousands of Russian men of the relevant age have fled the country, but some of Russia's neighbors have begun to create difficulties for the entry of Russian citizens into their territory.

The new conscription regulations announced by President Putin are supposed to officially encompass about 300,000 conscripts, but according to actual estimates, the authorities intend to conscript at least a million citizens.

Today Putin officially announced the annexation of the occupied Ukrainian regions to Russia.

The meaning of the step is, among other things, that any Ukrainian attack on them will be considered an attack on Russia's sovereign territory - which would justify, according to Russian law, the expansion of conscription and the sending of conscript soldiers (as opposed to permanent soldiers) to combat.

Until today, at least formally, the government could not send conscripted soldiers to fight in Ukraine.

In addition, the annexation increases the fear in the West that Russia will use tactical nuclear weapons, as threatened by Putin, Medvedev and other Russian officials, since fighting in the annexed regions will now be considered a "foreign invasion" of Russia's sovereign territory.
