In exchange for billions? Iran announced a "prisoner exchange deal" with the US | Israel today

2022-10-01T20:49:00.899Z

Although the eighth round of the nuclear talks has been stalled for many months, the parties reached a breakthrough in the issue of the detainees • The Iranian news agency "Noor" said some of the sanctions on the republic will be lifted, leading to the freezing of huge amounts of Iranian assets

Iran and the US have reached understandings under which prisoners will be mutually released, the Iranian news agency "Noor" said this evening (Saturday).

The United States did confirm that an American citizen was released on Saturday, but did not specify that this was a deal. According to Iran, the deal was reached through the mediation of a "state in the region" and that in exchange for the release of the Iranian-American citizen, assets of the Islamic Republic that were up until now under American sanctions would be released. Worth billions of dollars, it is claimed.

The American government confirmed that the American citizen Siamak Namzi was released for "renewable leave" after 2500 days of being imprisoned and will be able to stay with his family in Tehran, and his father will be allowed to go to Germany for medical treatment.

Both the son and the father were convicted and imprisoned for "cooperation with a government hostile to Iran".

.

The final release will probably be when the Americans release the Iranians imprisoned in their territory.

It is also possible that the announcement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that Iran's ally, Venezuela, has released seven Americans, is part of the agreement.

Either way, the US has not yet confirmed that there is a deal with Iran or that they have agreed to lift some of the sanctions.

As you may recall, the eighth round of the nuclear talks has been stalled for months, and the US has made it clear that it will be ready to lift the sanctions imposed on Iran in exchange for a mutual return to the nuclear agreement. However, it is unclear which sanctions the US intends to lift as part of the prisoner exchange, if any , and if it is the same sanctions that it pledged to remove as part of a nuclear deal.
