The far-right president remains faithful to the style that conquered millions of Brazilians despite the advice of his allies of "the old policy" to moderate the tone

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is a machine gun for headlines, and his seemingly uncontrollable verbiage is a fundamental part of his political capital.

To his history of racist, misogynistic, sexist, authoritarian or nostalgic phrases of the military dictatorship of his time as a deputy and well known before reaching the presidency, in 2018, a long list has been added now that he holds the head of State.

There are diverse phrases, from pandemic and environmental denialism to all kinds of attacks on democratic institutions.

These will be some of the most remembered:

"In my specific case, due to my track record as an athlete, if I were contaminated by the virus I wouldn't have to worry, I wouldn't feel anything, at most a little flu or a little cold."

(March 2020)

Brazil registered the first cases of covid-19 and although it had previously questioned the virulence of the virus, this phrase, proclaimed with the solemnity of a televised speech to the nation, was the foundation stone of denialism that would mark all its management of the health crisis .

From then on, the lack of sensitivity towards the victims and the misinformation about medicines and vaccines were a constant.

"Y?

I'm sorry, what do you want me to do?

I am Messiah, but I do not perform miracles” (April 2020)

Another aggressive response to the press when Brazil reached 5,000 deaths.

Today, the country has almost 700,000 deaths from covid-19, well above the world average by number of inhabitants.

“It's no use running away from it, running away from reality.

We have to stop being a country of queers” (November 2020)

Bolsonaro has always been against social isolation measures to stop the spread of the virus.

Homophobia and toxic masculinity are also house marks.

"If you become an alligator, it's your problem" (December 2020)

Thus, he criticized that the pharmaceutical company Pfizer was not responsible for the possible side effects of the vaccine against covid-19.

The government delayed negotiations with the laboratories, but when Brazilians were finally able to enthusiastically join the vaccination campaign, many went to line up dressed as alligators.

The recently dismissed president of Petrobras went to get immunized in those days with a green Lacoste polo shirt with its crocodile logo.

"It's over.

I'm not going to wait for my family to be screwed in bad faith, or a friend of mine just because I can't change someone from security that belongs to the structure.

It changes;

if you can't, you change the chief, if you can't change the chief, you change the minister.

And final point, we are not here for a joke” (April 2020)

With the country immersed in the chaos of the pandemic, the video of a meeting of the council of ministers in which Bolsonaro complained about not being able to protect his environment came to light through a judicial hearing.

Shortly after, the then Minister of Justice, Sérgio Moro, resigned accusing him of interfering with the leadership of the Federal Police to protect his children from various corruption scandals.

"You can go fuck yourself, shitty press, you can stick all those cans of condensed milk up your ass" (January 2021).

Attacks on journalists have been recurrent.

On this occasion he charged against the press for having revealed an unusual purchase of huge amounts of condensed milk by the Armed Forces.

“Pirate yourself, Alexandre de Moraes, stop being a scoundrel” (September 2021)

The attacks on this judge of the Federal Supreme Court, who has Bolsonaro in the spotlight for his continuous attacks against democratic institutions, are a classic of the most radical Bolsonaro circles.

Judge Moraes is currently presiding over the Superior Electoral Court, which has acquired an unusual role in these elections.

“The Amazon is not burning.

You can throw a can of gasoline in the jungle, which does not burn, the jungle is humid” (December 2021)

Bolsonaro has repeated this idea dozens of times, despite the fact that during his administration deforestation and fires in the tropical forest have broken all records.

He also often repeats that the native vegetation of Brazil is intact, as found by the Portuguese Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500.

“Together, with faith, we will achieve our goals.

It is a mission that I have and only God gets me out of that chair (of the Presidency of the Republic)” (May 2022)

Biblical quotes and mentions of God are in the DNA of Bolsonarism, as well as contempt for the rules of the democratic game.

On other occasions he has also said that he is only considering leaving power "prisoner or dead."

"The results of the polls will be respected if the elections are clean and transparent" (August 2022)

When he tries to give a truce in his escalation to question the reliability of the electronic voting system without evidence, Bolsonaro says that he will accept the result "if" the elections are clean, implying that these conditions do not exist today.

“Are there people who have a bad time?

Yes, there are people who have a bad time in Brazil.

Has anyone seen someone asking for bread at the bakery door?

That doesn't exist, damn it” (August 2022)

In the streets of the main cities of Brazil it is not difficult to see people who even rummage through the garbage in search of food.

Almost 33 million Brazilians go hungry, according to a report published in June by the Brazilian Network for Research on Food Sovereignty and Security.

"'Imbrochavel, Imbrochavel!"

(September 2022)

Difficult to translate into Spanish, an "imbrochável" would be a man who does not have erectile dysfunction problems.

Bolsonaro chanted in favor of his alleged sexual power in an act before thousands of followers during the celebrations of the bicentennial of Independence, on September 7.

Next to him, his wife, Michelle, his great electoral asset to attract the vote of evangelical women.
