Properly separating is not that easy.

There is a lot of valuable organic waste in the residual waste.

In the Corona year 2020, more waste was produced in the Starnberg district than ever before.

The year after, the total amount of waste fell again, but only slightly.

A fourth ton is likely.

District – The municipal company AWISTA presented its business figures and waste statistics for 2021 on Thursday.

As always broken down by type of waste.

According to the district's disposal company, these also differ from an economic point of view.

Some bring money, others cost.

amount of waste

AWISTA pays for the disposal of residual waste in the incinerator.

Here, the per capita amount remained constant compared to 2020 at 113 kilograms per district inhabitant.

The amount of e-waste, which had risen by a whopping 20 percent from 2019 to 2020, fell by six percent.

AWISTA can currently earn money with paper and metal.

The quantities did decrease slightly.

But the high world market prices were partly responsible for the fact that 2021 was better economically than the previous year.

At EUR 17.3 million, sales were almost two million higher.

But the expenses were also higher.

The surplus nevertheless rose from 155,000 to 325,000 euros.

organic waste

The amount of organic waste has remained constant, having increased significantly from 2019 to 2020.

In 2021, more than 10,000 tons were produced again.

And in the district, comparatively little waste ends up in the organic waste bin.

In the spring and summer, AWISTA emptied organic bins separately in some municipalities and had the contents analyzed.

"The rate of errors is pleasingly low," reported AWISTA board member Christoph Wufka at the presentation of the waste balance sheet.

It is only 1.5 percent by weight.

A low miss rate in organic waste is important.

Because it is used in fermentation plants in which biogas is produced.

For this, the garbage must be as free as possible of plastic bags.

On the other hand, too much organic waste still ends up in the residual waste bins, says Wufka.

Around 30 percent of their contents are actually organic waste, which could be turned into biogas, which is urgently needed in view of the energy crisis.

Wufka relies on figures from the Federal Environment Agency.

The Starnberg district last carried out its own residual waste analysis in 2016, and another one is to be carried out next year.

packagings

Retail packaging is disposed of in the Starnberg district via the yellow sack.

The AWISTA is not responsible for this, but rather the dual systems such as the Green Dot.

The municipal company still lists the quantities in its waste balance sheet.

In the past two years, they have increased continuously by 2.2 percent, to around 32.9 kilograms per district resident.

But too much of this lightweight packaging, some of which consists of several materials, ends up in the residual waste or paper bin, complains Wufka.

The yellow sack as a collection system for light packaging should soon be history in the district.

On Thursday, Wufka explained: "We want to introduce the yellow bin in 2025." That was an "eminent wish of the citizens", and the AWISTA administrative board - which consists of the district administrator, district councilors and mayors - had commissioned the board with the introduction.

Achieving the goal will probably be tough.

You might have to go to court.

The dual systems are responsible for collecting lightweight packaging.

The administrative district cannot readily decide on the type of collection.

One reason for the change: The sacks would tear open too easily and the contents would be blown away by the wind.

waste fees

It is not yet clear whether the garbage fees in the district will increase in the coming year.

One strives to keep them constant, but he cannot promise that yet, said Wufka.

On the one hand there is the good result from the last and previous years.

On the other hand, there are rising costs, some of which are not yet known, for example for energy or waste incineration.

The AWISTA may incur additional costs of 35 euros per ton just for the disposal of residual waste.

Reason: the inclusion of waste incineration in CO2 pricing.
