With negative pressure into the future - Söder: "We are fully behind the Hyperloop"

It is a special project that Prime Minister Markus Söder is focusing on: the Hyperloop.

Yesterday was the groundbreaking ceremony for the first test track in Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen.

A longer second section is already planned for 2025.

Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen

- If Berlin were Germany's New York, then the Free State could be compared to California, at least in terms of commitment and commitment to high-tech issues - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder made this comparison on Friday afternoon at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 24-meter-long Hyperloop test track -Research program of the Technical University of Munich.

"We are the federal state that invests the most in this area." Funds totaling 3.5 million euros were made available for the flagship project in Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen alone.

“We are fully behind it.

If everything goes well, I can very well imagine that something bigger will come of it.” For example, a route from Munich city center to the airport that could be covered in ten minutes.

"We are in one of the biggest stages of development

Implementation is "Made in Bavaria"

Students in Garching have been working on the Hyperloop project since 2015.

They have repeatedly won the “SpaceX” competitions set up by Tesla founder Elon Musk.

"The Hyperloop is not a Bavarian idea, but the implementation is 'Made in Bavaria'," said Science Minister Markus Blume.

The aim of the research program is to build a Hyperloop route by the end of the decade that can transport passengers at around 850 km/h.

In a few months, however, the 24-meter-long test track in the district is to be opened first.

An extension to a length of one kilometer is planned for 2025.

"Speeds of several hundred km/h can then be reached," says Hyperloop project manager Gabriele Semino.

The advantages of the high-speed train: a short journey time,

Emission-free mobility and – thanks to the many small cabins – a certain amount of privacy.

The difficulties: not very easy to implement and a certain skepticism among the population.

“There is a risk with all modes of transport.

We don't just want to further develop the Hyperloop, we want to certify it as a means of transport for passengers," says Semino.

Because the high-tech agenda money from the Free State should not only be used for research, Söder also wants the development of new business ideas.

"The Americans make a business out of every little thing, we're still a bit behind in Germany," he said.

The full-scale prototype

A total of six chairs with 86 students from 28 nations have been working on the first full-scale TUM Hyperloop prototype, which consists of a passenger module, a server module and a vacuum tube, at the Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen site since April 2021.

"We want to test the technical system with the first test track," said Semino.

In the near future, the model will also give guests and visitors the opportunity to experience the feeling of traveling with the Hyperloop up close.

"I'll be back soon and I'm looking forward to the first drive - after Minister Markus Blume has tested the prototype," joked the Prime Minister.

"Science fiction becomes reality."
