With the beginning of October, the International Month for Awareness of Early Detection of Breast Cancer “Pink Month”, the Ministry of Health launched a national awareness campaign on breast cancer.

This national campaign coincides with the campaign implemented by the National Program for Cancer Control in Hama Governorate, which was previously carried out in Tartous and Lattakia governorates to investigate breast, cervical and prostate cancers.

According to the Head of the Reproductive Health Department at the Ministry, Dr. Alaa Erkossi, the awareness campaign, which also comes under the slogan “Your awareness is your strength,” will focus on health awareness and education activities in and outside health centers about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, identifying risk factors and how to avoid them, in addition to establishing Seminars on the latest scientific developments on breast tumors.

In a statement to SANA, Dr. Araksoussi indicated that the campaign targets women over the age of 20 to undergo a clinical examination, and for those over the age of 40 to undergo mammography, and to refer high-risk women under the age of 40 to undergo ultrasound, pointing out that a formation was formed. Teams in the health directorates in the governorates to supervise and educate in this field.

Dr. Arksousi pointed out that all centers that provide reproductive health services are participating in the campaign, numbering about 960 health centers in various governorates, and all of them will provide breast examination, education and awareness services, indicating that the number of health facilities where mammography devices are available is 34, distributed In all governorates, except for Idlib and Raqqa, due to the repercussions of the terrorist war on those areas.

Dr. Arksousi indicated that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the world, affecting one woman in eight, and 2 million new cases are recorded annually globally, pointing out that early detection in the early stages of the tumor makes treatment better, improves the prognosis and raises the cure rates. to more than 90 percent.
