127 people were killed and 180 others injured yesterday in a riot during a soccer match in Indonesia.

The website of the Russia Today channel quoted East Java Police Chief Nico Aventa as telling reporters: "127 people were killed, two of them were policemen."

He added: 34 people died in the stadium, while the others died in hospital during the rescue operation.

According to the Indonesian media, the chaos began when fans stormed the stadium after their team lost to Persibaya.

The information confirmed that Arima FC supporters clashed with Javanese Persibaya Surabaya fans after Arima's 3-2 defeat in the match that was held in Malang Regency, Java.

Police added that most of the dead were caused by a stampede of fans during the match.
