A medical team at Al-Basel Specialized Hospital in Karam Al-Lawz in Homs succeeded in performing a rare and complex surgery to remove a basal cell tumor from the face of an eighty-year-old woman.
Dr. Samir Sabbagh, a specialist in maxillofacial surgery, said in a statement to SANA reporter that when the patient visited the maxillofacial department at the hospital with a complaint about the appearance of a recurrent lateral tumor “the left orbital”, three years ago, an investigational biopsy was taken of the tumor and the surrounding area.
Sabbagh added that several measures were taken, including a tomography to investigate any tumorous metastases in the head, neck, chest and abdomen, with a consultation with a radiologist, a consultation with ophthalmologists in order to investigate the safety of the eye, and an examination of visual ability.
And he indicated that the danger of the surgical operation lies in the wide excision area and its sensitivity, due to the tumor reaching the body of the eye, and the necessity of performing a skin graft to compensate for the location of the tumor, pointing out that the tumor was completely removed, and the eyeball was preserved because there were no infiltrates within it, according to the radiological study, and compensation An autologous skin graft taken from the anterior thigh, with lower eyelid manufacturing.
Dr. Sabbagh confirmed that the patient is currently in a good health condition, and is recovering well.
