Brazil goes to the polls today in presidential elections after one of the most tumultuous election campaigns since the country's return to democracy in 1985, including incidents of violence and murder that police believe were politically motivated.

President Jair Bolsonaro and his rival from the left, Lula da Silva, the former president who according to the polls is likely to win, have even started wearing protective vests.

At least two dozen candidates on the left and right said they sought police protection after receiving death threats from opponents.

About 40 local politicians from the left and the right were killed in the first half of 2022, and another 170 were victims of threats due to their positions, according to a report by the Observatory of Political and Electoral Violence at the University of Rio de Janeiro.

140 attacks against politicians were recorded from July to September 23 - a 40% increase compared to 101 attacks in the previous quarter.

In recent weeks, the candidates have stepped up their efforts to woo voters in Latin America's largest economy.

For Lula, the meaning of more votes is victory in the first round of voting, without the need for the second round.

Bolsonaro also needs votes as he lags behind Lula by 14%.

The elections in Brazil also include elections for governors, senators and representatives of 26 states and the federal district.

Voting is expected to start at 2 pm Israel time and end at midnight.

In the Brazilian election system, a winning candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote.

If no candidate passes this threshold, a second round will be held between the top two candidates.

More than 156 million Brazilians have the right to vote.

The counting of votes will begin after the polls close at night.

According to Brazil's electoral commission, the final results of the first round will be announced later tonight.

In the previous elections, the official results were announced two or three months after the end of the voting.

If a second round is needed, it will be held on October 30.

Lula, 76 years old, was president of Brazil for two terms - from 2003-2006 and from 2007-2011.

He entered the political arena in the 1970s as a labor strike leader who opposed the military regime.

In 1980 he was among the founders of the Workers' Party (PT), which became the main left-wing party in the country.

His tenure was characterized by programs aimed at reducing poverty and inequality in a country full of corruption.

His campaign today promises a new tax regime that will allow for higher public investment.

He pledged to solve the country's hunger crisis, which worsened during Bolsonaro's tenure.

He also promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation in the Amazon.

Bolsonaro is a former army officer who held public office for 27 years before running for president in 2018.

A marginal figure in politics for most of his life, he made headlines in 2010 as the leader of a more radical right-wing movement.

As president, he promoted a conservative agenda, and was supported by important clerics.

His government became known for its support of the brutal exploitation of land in the Amazon, leading to record deforestation in the rainforest.

In his campaign, he promised to increase mining, privatize public companies and produce more sustainable energy to lower energy prices.

He also pledged to continue distributing a monthly benefit to households in the amount of $110 per month.
