After being surrounded in the face of the (always) rapid Ukrainian counter-offensive in the east and in particular in Lyman, the Russian army ensured

The essential

  • The Ukrainian army entered Lyman, a strategic city in eastern Ukraine, in the Donetsk region on Saturday, whose annexation the day before by Moscow was strongly condemned by kyiv and the West.

  • Reacting to the Russian withdrawal from the city, the leader of the Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, denounced the “nepotism” reigning in the Russian army and called on Moscow to use “low-power nuclear weapons”.

  • Following the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Moscow, formalized on Friday, kyiv announced to seize the International Court of Justice, urging it "to take up the case as soon as possible".

“The problem of the one who started it all”

Volodymyr Zelensky also said, speaking of Russian President Vladimir Putin: "Until all of you solve the problem of who started it all, who started this senseless war against Ukraine, you will be killed one by one , becoming scapegoats, because you do not admit that this war is a historical mistake for Russia”.

"Other Ukrainian flags"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured Saturday that his army, which now controls the strategic town of Lyman, will take over "in the coming week" other towns in the Donetsk region, annexed on Friday by Russia.

“During the week, new Ukrainian flags flew over Donbass,” where the Donetsk region is located, Zelensky said in his daily address.

"There will be even more in the coming week."

The loss of Lyman, a strategic rail hub in the region, is a major setback for Moscow, which announced Friday the annexation of Donetsk and three other Ukrainian regions to Russia.

“Russia is losing” the war, “it has lost it in moral and political terms”, but “Ukraine has not yet won”, he judged.

Visit to Ukraine by German Defense Minister

German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Saturday, her first since the start of the Russian invasion, at a time when kyiv is insistently demanding that Berlin deliver combat tanks.

Minister Lambrecht visited the port city of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the German Defense Ministry said in a statement, without specifying the duration of the visit.

She notably met her Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov.
