More and more gas suppliers are increasing their prices.

Existing customers also have to reckon with higher costs.

An overview of which providers are the strongest.

Munich/Berlin – Russian gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline are still standing still.

Nevertheless, the situation on the gas exchange has eased slightly in the meantime.

At the end of August, the price for a megawatt hour (MWh) of gas was still 347 euros, according to the comparison portal Check24.

It now costs 173 euros (as of September 20, 2022).

For comparison: At the same time last year, the MWh cost only 33 euros.

Gas price: Suppliers pass on high exchange prices to customers

This fivefold increase in prices on the stock exchange is now also being felt by end consumers.

"Energy suppliers are increasingly having to buy gas at the current record prices on the exchange," says Steffen Suttner, Energy Manager at Check24.

As a result, consumers are flooded with price increases in droves.

The following table shows which basic suppliers have increased their tariffs for existing customers by at least 200 percent and how much more that costs with a sample annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours (kWh).

Gas price: Consumers face additional costs of up to 5,800 euros

The biggest price shock threatens from October the customers of the gas and heat service Börnsen GmbH from Schleswig-Holstein.

Customers will then have to pay 7,784 euros per year for their gas instead of the previous 1,988 euros.

This results in a price increase of 291.6 percent or 5,796 euros.

The situation is similar for customers from Bavaria.

Stadtwerke Feuchtwangen's prices have risen sharply and are now demanding 240.9 percent more.

The model household calculated in the table then has to pay 4,322 euros more at the end of the year than before.

However, that's not the tip of the iceberg.

Because if you want to conclude a new gas tariff, you have to dig even deeper into your pocket.

Here prices have risen by up to 452 percent.

Mini increase: Some gas customers get off lightly

But not all of the basic suppliers listed in the price increase list have increased their prices for existing customers so drastically.

At the bottom of the 1064 companies is Energieversorgung Beckum from North Rhine-Westphalia.

Here consumers have to pay 5.6 percent more, which “only” amounts to 230 euros more on the annual statement.

Only Stadtwerke Bretten is behind them, having raised their price by 5.3 percent.

However, this increase was already in April of this year - so a further increase in costs cannot be completely ruled out.
