An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted southwestern Japan today, but no tsunami warnings were issued.
The quake occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers off the Osumae Peninsula in Miyazaki Prefecture, Xinhua quoted the Japan Meteorological Agency as saying.
The agency did not issue a tsunami warning after the quake, while there were no initial reports on the extent of injuries and damage, and no unusual activities were recorded so far at the Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Japan is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes are active that extends southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
