The amendment comes against the background of the severe shortage of nursing personnel • As part of the decision, two major amendments to the government's decision received in 2020 regarding the allocation of permits to foreign workers in the field of nursing institutions will be approved

Minister of Welfare Meir Cohen and Minister of Social Equality Merav Cohen will bring for approval at the cabinet meeting this morning (Sunday) an amendment that will expand the possibility of employing foreign workers as caregivers in nursing homes - Israel Hayom has learned.

The amendment comes against the background of the severe shortage of nursing personnel.

As part of the decision, two major amendments to the government's decision, which was adopted in 2020 regarding the allocation of permits to foreign workers in the field of nursing institutions, will be approved.

The first amendment is the expansion of the assignment of foreign nursing workers also to active geriatrics departments - currently it is forbidden to employ foreign workers in these departments.

Another amendment is the transfer of standards to institutions for the elderly supervised by the Ministry of Social Affairs, where there is also currently a ban on their employment.

The amendment will now allow hundreds of employees to be assigned immediately to these departments.

In Israel, there are 102 old people's homes for the self-employed and frail, under the supervision and licensing of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, and about 4,700 residents live there, the average age of which is 85. 95% of the residents need help with bathing and dressing, many do not move around independently.

Minister Merav Cohen: "The government's decision will help the nursing population who need it the most, those whose lives are completely dependent on others, and it allows additional hands to be put into the most difficult departments and thickens the manpower in the institutions of the Ministry of Welfare."

Minister Meir Cohen: "The issue of the lack of workers in the field of nursing is critical and today we are expanding the system and providing more quality personnel for this important task."
